Door County Salmon

Well went up to Door County for a little salmon fishing the first week of July and had some tough fishing. Fished out of Gills Rock exclusively as the place we were staying was less than a mile from the dock. Caught a few but it was SLOW in compared to last year. We would usually get just one each morning and night trip with a few skunks. (Its a long morning when you have poles set at 4) Would feel pretty bad about our fishing ability until we get back to the dock and find out charters we coming in with nothing or one also. Everyone at the dock had the same story, once in a while a boat would get 2 or 3 but that was IT! The few fish we did catch were on the bottom with green and white J-Plugs and Spoons.

Talked to some of the charters and they said they haven’t had this slow of start since 1998! The tough thing about the whole deal was the fish were there! We have never marked so many fish but we just couldn’t get them to hit. Now (two weeks later) I have been watching some reports on-line and it looks like the fish are just starting to go.

But all was not lost in the trip, the weather was GREAT and the sun rises/sets were a thing of beauty.

There are few things better than a Lake Michigan sunrise!

I’m headed to Port Washington next week. Hopefully the kings will cooperate as well this week as the coho’s did in June.
