Metro Ice Thickness and Fishing Reports

I want to make one last trip before the weather warms up next week. Has anyone been out on the Twin Cities’ metro lakes recently? Is the ice still thick enough to drive on or do we need to walk out now? I appreciate any suggestions on where I can find a good panfish or crappie bite for my kids.

I didn’t go out on Sunday because I didn’t want to get my sled stuck in the slush. Heard it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be but the bar ended up being a lot less work…..

Chisago was a slush disaster last night. Need big truck, close eyes and drive like hell.

The rain did not help that lake. Coming off Sunday was a disaster.

I was hoping this cold weather will refreeze the slush so I can drive on the lakes. I don’t have a big truck that can get through a thick slush layer.

Even last Friday was not the best … the snow melted and where we went to look over a spot … you could tell exactly where every truck had driven.

Still winter on the northern border.

I tried to get out this afternoon, drove a third away down the lake and turned around, not going to beat my truck that way, snowmobile time! Polk County.

Went out on Friday. Damn near needed an extension on my auger! Plenty of ice yet. No idea slush conditions since the rain

Not sure where you heard that. But the slush is awful after the rain. I would sink up to my running boards. And my wheels were packed tight with ice and slush. It was over top of my foot with water

I checked Lake Jane just now. There was a pickup on the ice. I parked on the ice at the landing. Poked around with my spud and it seemed solid. Someone had plowed the landing area. Could see tracks where the slush had been but it was frozen. There was an area of thinner ice next to the landing. It has refrozen but the spud hit water after a couple pokes. Didn’t have an auger but I’m guessing the main ice is good. Bring a pfd and check it carefully before going out.

Lol, tracked machines nightmare. Hoping these cold nights have made it fishable. I’m not ready to quit yet.

Medicine Lake today: walked out, the north landing had a lot of thin ice and slush. Panfish were biting good. Not much for size but numbers. A couple better fish. Group of 5 got crappie limits (5 fish), some sunnies (limit also 5).
About 20” of ice but it seemed soft or wet. One daredevil drove on the ice! Not sure where they accessed the lake. Maybe a private home. Easy walking though and beautiful weather!

Two lakes I fished in NW Sconny yesterday were wheelers only. Plenty of ice but the landings we’re already bad. Hopefully get a couple more weekends on the ice.

Saw a 1 smaller SUV out on Medicine today towards the middle of the lake. Not sure how it got out there. Also saw a handful of guys fishing the north end near the park. Didn’t actually get out myself and didn’t see what the landings look like. If you can get on the ice, seems like it’s still driveable.

Still 24″ on Big Salty, the one guy I saw drive out was rethinking his decision when he came off. N end landing is shot. I had to leave early, so not sure if the night bite I was there for came in or not, just a few gills and a rather entertaining largemouth during the afternoon.

Yeah we saw the SUV on Saturday. It seemed like it accessed the lake from the west. Definitely not doable from the park. We were out in front of the canoe rental/ beach.

I just got my seasonal lay off yesterday and can’t stop thinking “oh great now I can fish!” I’ve only fished a few winter seasons and don’t really know when to call it quits late-ice. Will this rain end everything for the Minneapolis area season regardless of lake size?

Very well could be, I’m on the strip between couple bays, saw a sign for Harrisons bay committee or something. Mostly done with that one, got er put in over the weekend and I’m out in Victoria now.

That was probably you I saw then. I ended up getting out to that same spot yesterday for a total of 10 min with my 3 year old. Caught 2 sunnies quick then he wanted to go home… Probably calling it for the ice season as my usual perch trip up to Woman lake ain’t happening this year due to slush and scheduling conflicts.

Will the rain end the season? Maybe.
People freak when temps get into the 60s but ice creates a micro-climate, its not 60 at the surface of the ice, rain just eats into it.

I doubt the rain will end the season in the metro. Just going to be harder to make the jump from shore across the open water gap. Ice is still plenty thick. Depending on how much snow tomorrow, that could make things suck but not impossible.

Wow you guys really made me feel better with your responses thank you very much. I know it’s always a game at your own risk this time of season but if I’m not the only one still trying I don’t feel so discouraged.

Last evening I tried to fish a new lake called “Charley” in North Oaks and had no idea that North Oak was a private community until the Ramsey county sheriff showed up and promptly kicked me out!

I’ll probably head north after tomorrow where they’re getting snow instead of rain. I’ll roll the dice tomorrow morning around here maybe

Fishing isn’t dead yet. It’s just getting good. I bring a 8 ft 2 x 10 with this time of the year just to keep the season alive

Haha yes I have read that we can get good action at this time but I didn’t know for certain how it related to our location (they’re always fishing in Manitoba or devils lake). I’ll bring a plank out there with me tomorrow, cheers! toast

Ramsey County sheriff’s department has been practicing rescues with their airboat. They are ready …
