Took the family out today to try and catch a few crappies and had an amazing day.
We struck out away from the crowd, ending up in about 12 feet of water near weeds and found a good chunk of ACTIVE crappies. We used tungsten jigs with a plastic tail, but honestly I don’t think it would have mattered what you were using. The jig would get 5 feet down and the flasher would light up. No subtle action or technique was needed, they were absolutely pounding the jigs. We caught a few sunnies as well, but they were mainly smaller. We had some tip ups out for my son and only fished one hole between the three of us and ended up catching probably 60 fish. All between noon and 3 mainly.
You might be thinking, okay, metro crappies, I’ve had a lot of days catching 6 inchers like that. What caught me by surprise was the quality of fish. We threw everything back as we have some crappies in the fridge still, but we probably caught 25 crappies over 10 inches and maybe a half dozen over 11″.
If you’re tired of small metro fish, do yourself a favor and get away from the crowd. A lot of crappies suspend over deeper holes or basins in the winter, but don’t overlook shallower water, you might even find some keepable fish that are willing to bite!
My wife caught most of the fish, I was just having fun watching, but she didn’t want me posting her picture online, so you’re stuck with these ones :).
