Metro area topwater?

Anyone throwing topwater for largemouth in/near the metro area? I tried a bit this past week without much activity, but could be the lake I was on (and the electrical storm the night before)…

Curious if the pattern is working for anyone – and if it’s a frog/pad bite or open water popper, plopper, dogwalker type, etc.

I’ve really been trying to get the frog bite going but it isn’t happening on the lakes I’ve been on. Gotten a couple fish here and there but nothing good. Worked a frog for an hour during my tournament yesterday without a fish. Typically it’s very good but this year it has been pretty awful for me. Haven’t given the spook much a chance this year though.

I was out Tuesday at day break and threw both a walking frog and a Toadrunner for about an hour. A couple slaps at it from smaller fish but that was about it. Am thinking with next week’s warmer water, topwater will pick up…

Hopefully I can report back Saturday, weather permitting. I’ve only been out once on my favorite local area bass lake, and the top water bite was great. I was throwing a big black popper with my eight weight.

Agreed. If I get some time to sneak out this weekend I’ll give the spook a workout this week on some spots that usually produce and report back. Headed to Algoma Wednesday so hopefully when I get back they’ll be crushing the frog just in time for my tourney on East/West Rush.

OK, here’s my report from my favorite East Metro Bass lake. The water temp was 70.2 degrees. The lake shore association committed their annual atrocity and poisoned the lake with herbicide again, destroying a lot of the shallow cover along the shoreline. I found fish around docks and along the inside edge of the remaining weedbeds, which was in 6 or 7 feet of water. I got on the water before first light and fished until the sun was on the water and the lake got busy. I’m trying to remember when I last fished that lake with a wind from the ESE. That’s not a common direction.

There was a definite bite window, from approximately 5:30 until 6:30. In that hour I found an even dozen fish, all on topwaters.. Most of them were right at 16 inches and a couple of them were bigger. I started off with a big black popper and finished with a craft foam thing called a “Stealth Bomber”. Fun morning!
