Metered Braid

Anyone using it and really like it? I am thinking about getting some Power Pro Depth Hunter to use on some walleye trolling reels and to double as dipsy reels on Superior.

The issue I have is that I recently realized how far off my line counters were and I want to have a reliable starting point and not rely on the line counter.

I guess what I’m really looking for is what other brands are out there and if the metered lines are as good as the flagship models.

Fireline has metered line. I use it on a couple spinning rods I use for trolling cranks in right areas. Most of the time I allow it to hit bottom and crank it up a little, but the metered line gives me a reference point and starting place on my next pass.

I haven’t used it but I like that the Depth Hunter has black lines every 5 feet as well as the colors. If you have to cut some off for whatever reason I’d rather cut off 5 feet than 10 ( I think the Fireline changes colors every 10 feet?)

I have been using meatered Suffix Performance braid for a long time. I have seen no difference in performance than the non metered power pro I use on my sturgeon rods. Though the suffix gets used a lot more.
I have no preference one over the other. I started with power pro then I was intrigued by the suffix metered so I gave that a try so I stuck with what is working.

The problem with line counters being off is nothing new. The way the gears are set up in the counter, it displays “x” number of feet based on the counter based on “y” number of revolutions of the reel. As we know, the circumference of the reel is much larger when it is fully spooled versus when a large chunk of your line is in the water. That variation in reel circumference results in the line counter numbers always being off.

The most expensive line counters will be off if you do not calibrate them, takes some time, but of course if you lose line? you’ll have to start over

I fully understand the line counter thing. Even if you calibrate, it’s also somewhat dependent on line diameter because the feet per revolution will increase much faster with large diameter line.

Thanks for the replies. I think I’m going to go ahead with the depth hunter. I’ll report back on my findings.

i just picked up 2 spools of either 10lb or 14lb metered fireline. 50% off at Gander. figured why the heck not. also some 20lb mono for backing.

i have 2 okuma combos on their way as well.

I’ve been using 30 lb, metered, powerpro this season on a couple of rods. So far no issues. I’ve heard that the colors can bleed, but I haven’t experienced that myself.

Thanks for the feedback. What is your primary target or application?

Good point. I saw that in the reviews as well. It almost appeared that there may be some counterfeit products out there as someone suggested. This may be the cause of the fading.

I have some on order now due to be in on Wednesday. Hope to be spooling up this week.

Correction. The item has arrived. I ordered it on Friday it arrived today.

If anyone is interested in buying some, I highly recommend this seller on eBay.

Fishing Superior on a couple of lead core rigs out on planer boards. You might be right about the counterfeits.

So far so good for me. Fingers crossed. I bought it for a couple of non-line counter reels that I got in a “package deal”.

Let us know how the line works out. Did you go with the 30 pound?

I just picked up a fairly basic level-wind baitcasting reel and I’m considering spooling it with depth hunter. Primary application will be long-line trolling, but I’d also like to be able use this reel for soaking suckers for some muskie this fall.

I was thinking 40 pound PP made sense, given that it roughly matches the diameter of the 10 pound Trilene that I typically fish. Any good counter points to that thought?

I went with 30 lb. I spoiled it up and I think I got an extra 100′.

I really like this line for its color increments. It’s 25′ per color and every 5′ there’s a black and white segment. Much easier to count out 100′ than the other metered braids.

I’ve been using Power Pro depth hunter on 2 rods this year and have grown to like it a lot. Great for trolling! As for the bleeding I haven’t seen any yet.

We still have several ganders open in the area that are still selling off the merchandise. You can definitely tell that they are selling of merchandise from other stores and warehouses. I am finding things that our local stores never carried before.

Its called the “trickle down effect”. What’s junk and won’t sell here in Minnesota trickles down to Iowa stores. lol Go find a Scheels.

I grabbed a spool of 30# Depth Hunter today. I ended up taking a drive to Spring Lake Park to Vado’s Bait & Tackle and it was well worth it. They only had 2 spools left but that was better than anyone else in town, including Cabela’s. Price was $1 more than Amazon, $3 less than Cabela’s. I brought my reel and Greg spooled the Depth Hunter up with a chunk of mono backing for no charge. Was not fishing today but they had a great selection of live bait as well.

Vados is great. They’re bait can’t be beat.

Did they have other lb test?

How large were the spools? 150 or 333 yd?

all they had was 150 yard 30# — i think they have just 1 spool left. They had a good selection of other PP line but that was it for the metered stuff.

Out of curiosity — what would you use for a leader, if anything? Primarily trolling. No boards, just long lining.

I came across another option that seems worth trying. Kast King is doing a multicolored braid that switches colors every 10 meters. Think that’s approx 33 feet, so you’d only have to let 3 colors out to get to 100. Not sure if it has more frequent black/white marks.

Price is VERY good — they sell a 547 yard spool for about the same price as 167 yards of the Depth Hunter!

Thinking of taking the 30# PP off my biggest bait caster and going with some 65# kast king, moving the PP to a smaller reel.

I’ve found a few others as well. Although, I’ve always been happy with Power Pro products.

Finally got some time on the water with this stuff and I’ll say I’m pretty happy. Didn’t really use it to meter out any distance of line since I was fishing shallow diving crank baits on Superior, but I can tell you that it’s some seriously strong stuff.

Caught 3 steelhead , 3 cohos and missed about 6 more without 1 break off. I’m pretty impressed. I’d say that passes the test. There’s no walleye out there that will test the line like that.

    Nice!

Yeah, none of the walleye, smallmouth, or sheepies I’ve caught this summer have come close to testing this stuff. Only reason I’m thinking of trying another brand is price/local availability.

The metered color feature was used heavily on my boat this summer. It’s great to tell my kid (10yr old) to just stop at yellow, or whatever. I can focus on driving the boat and he can get the baits back where they belong with no doubt.

Now if someone would make a metered mono!

Bringing this back up as it seems metered braid is playing hard to get these days. I was at Vado’s, Capra’s, Thorne Bros, and Fleet Farm yesterday and couldn’t find anything suitable. Vado’s had a couple boxes of 6lb Fireline left over; Fleet Farm had the metered Fireline in 6 and 8lb and had it on sale for $10 (retail $17). I asked at the spooling counter at all places as well. The guy at Vado’s told me they “don’t even make metered braid in bulk spools” which I found curious. doah

I ended up grabbing the last 500-yard spool of 20lb Berkley Pro Spec on Amazon last night for $36 (price is up to $65 today and now “out of stock”). I had planned on doing just 1 reel and wanted to stick with PP to keep the metered sections a consistent length, but at that price I can fill up both reels and save my remaining chunk of PP for a rainy day.

Is 3000 yds not considered bulk?
