Mercury SC1000 gauges

I have a 2013 Mercury 40 HP four stroke on a 1992 Alumacraft Dominator 16′-6″. The slowest I can troll this motor down to on this boat when it is calm is about 2.5 to 2.7 mph. I have read about the SC1000 gauges from Mercury. They have a troll/rpm control. Is anybody familiar with this gauge on my size motor. I have been told by Mercury that it will work/install on my motor, but want to confirm if I will really be able to troll my motor down to slower speeds (preferably below 2 mph). Mercury stated that my motor has range of 700-1000 rpms and was not quite sure what they meant by that. Has anybody used these gauges? I am in contact with a dealer to see what they have to say but thought I would check in here.

I know I can use trolling socks/bags and my trolling motor facing backwards. However, when doing it at night I would like to not worry about having bags out, etc.

    Thanks!

What Mercury means is that on your motor, you can set the rpms via Troll Control as low as 700 rpm. Not sure what your current in-gear idle rpm is now.

    HRG,

Thanks. So I would need to know my current idle rpm to see if the gauge would really help me or not? Is that a correct thought? Seems weird to me that the smaller motors would have a higher low end troll. Wouldn’t need as high a low end rpm to push a smaller boat.

I’m pretty sure your engine will only go to the normal idle RPM. Attached is the description for the troll control pad for you dash. It lists the engines that will go below your normal idle. Figured I’d include both part numbers one for use with analog gauges and one for digital.

Keep in mind, these are 4-stroke motors, that need a certain amount of rpm to create oil pressure, to keep them lubed. This series may not have been designed to drop below 700rpm without risking internal damage.

I just put a set with the tach( which has all of the custom menu features for trim, troll rpm’s, gas mileage, temp, etc $300) on my 150 Verado. It takes a command module($180), main DTS engine to helm harness($160), tach harness($35), a DTS shifter control($350-$1,200), and a junction box ($70), i found this all out after i bought a motor. The motor usually needs to be synched to the command module by a dealer with Merc Software. However, mine will troll down to 500 rpm’s, but i don’t have an mph on it since it was windy and rough. Also the other gauges such as speedo, trim, oil do not work with that system unless you buy other harnesses and a analogue adapter, another few hundred.

Just heard back from the dealer that the gauge won’t help slow my RPM’s down. sad

You will need the appropriate gauge, plus the troll control kit.

The SC1000 tachometer has the Troll Control built-in, no need for an additional switch kit.

Would have been a nice option, just doesn’t sound like it will do my motor any good.
