Mercury PRO XS Owners and Smart Gauges ?

Alright I know this might a dumb questions but how do you know when to put oil in a PRO XS. I currently purchased a ranger late last year and only ran it a few times. I have never owned a 2 stroke motor before this one. I have mercury smart gauges installed in the dash. Do these track oil? Or will I hear a beep when oil is needed.

Any feedback would be greatly aprreciated.

You will definitely get beeping if it runs too low. I would make sure to always have a quart or two in the boat just in case. I check my regular opti every fill up, as I’ve learend the hard way that it’s better safe than sorry. Hopefully your oil reserve is bigger than mine, mine takes maybe 5 quarts, which is roughly two full tanks of gas.

If this was in the fishing side it might help , my XR6 has a tank in the boat I just look and fill it up when low ,the oil pumps into the motor resivior that is where the alarm is .

You will be surprised how long it takes to run the oil tank down to half full. At about half full, I top it off full again. Less air in the oil tank the better if you ask me.

Edit – the oil tank on my 150 opti is well over 2 gallons.

I guess that’s my questions. In my ranger the oil fill has its own cap and it seems like its built into the hall. So how would I be able tell how much is in there. I totally could be missing something here. I am an amateur when it comes to these things.

I don’t have the gauges but your motor will beep and not run at full throttle once it gets down to a quart or so of oil left. The mix should be 50/1, so I just go off how much gas I put in. My tank is 26 gallons. So I know one full tank of gas should be a few quarts of oil. I’m pretty sure you can get that gauge for smartcraft if it’s not on there already. I personally don’t trust analog gauges, but maybe the digital is better.

Make it a habit to check oil level.
I disabled alarms related to oil level and just check it regularly since there’s no longer anything to warn me against running out.

Trim the motor down, open the access door on the splash well. You’ll be able to see inside and see the oil res.

If the oil fill is on the motor, you’ll need to remove the cover to see the oil level.

My tank is opaque plastic. Located under the rear hatch cover. I can open the hatch and see the oil level in the tank. Most 600 series Rangers are similar.

To help completely answer your questions, regardless if you have Smartcraft gauges, you’ll most likely still have the analog oil level gauge on the dash. If, (most don’t but I did and don’t regret it), the last owner switched from the analog to the Smartcraft they would have had to run the wires to the tank and hook it up with the wiring located in the engine cowl to have the Smartcraft read the oil level digitally. Short answer is if you turn the key on–don’t turn over the motor–look for the oil reservoir gauge on the dash, if it’s at zero and you know you have oil in there, it’s being read by the Smartcraft, otherwise, you’ll see the reading just like your gas gauge. Hope this helps.
