I have a 2015 Mercury 50hp 4 stroke, it has a lock built into the motor mount for transporting. I was told that this sufficient enough that a transom saver isn’t needed but I’ve always had a transom saver and I can’t seem to confirm that this motor lock is good enough, can anyone help ease my worry lol ?? Thanks

You should have a page like this in your owners manual.

If you don’t feel like it’s sufficient enough then buy a 30 dollar transom saver like the one pictured above

Thank you, that’s what I figured. The dealer said the tilt lock was enough but I didn’t feel comfortable with it. Thank you

Just FYI the lock built into the motor mount is meant for maintenance of the outboard, not trailering. Get a traditional transom saver or look into something like the wedge.

    I have a 75 4-stroke Merc and use a wedge.

Get a 2×4, that’s my transom saver. I was watching an Angling Edge episode last week and guess what was laying in his spashwell? A short 2×4 and you could see the motor marks on it.

Imo I would have a transom saver to trailer! My boat is a 1996 and always had a transom saver, my transom is solid. You will not go wrong with 1 but your dealer can fix the bad transom for you for a fee! With that said if your a keep boat for a few years no worries to you but to the next few owners it might be a good idea your call. I have followed guys without and see the stress on the transom, good luck

Yeah I use a 1×2 with a couple holes drilled for a bungee around it for my little 25hp 2stroke. It flexes nicely. There is some obvious signs of stress on my transom but I honestly can’t remember if that’s from the guy before me… It doesn’t seem to have gotten worse over the last 6-8 years so don’t think it’s from me. Obv u need a thicker piece of wood for a heavier motor too
