    Can anybody tell me what year and cylinder this 40 hp mercury is with the serial number? A friend of mine cannot seem to tell and it’s hard to tell over the phone

    the search I did says its a 1994 40HP.
    I would bet that its a two cylinder engine.

    will dig into it for you for cylinder configuration

    according to boats.net and marine engine.com it is a four cylinder engine.
    pull the cowling and count the plug wires

    Bingo — never been done for a while, change the plugs
    one plug to each cylinder!

    Thanks guys, it is a 4 cylinder. It’s oil injected, anybody ever mix a little oil with there gas in case of oil pump failure? Anything else we should know for maintenance? Boat was just bought yesterday? Think sea foam is a good idea?

    My brother had that motor. Ran it for about 10 years no problems. Every few years it needed to have the carbs adjusted (synchronized). One thing about that motor is it’s a gas hog!
