Merc Dealer Story

I have a 115 merc 2 stroke. This is my second season. After the first season I had to send the pontoon back to the dealer for some service work (another long story) so I wasn’t able to winterize it. After this season I start to get it winterized and when I remove the lower unit plug about a pint of water comes out. I call my dealer and ask him if this is covered under warranty. They say “no, you ran over a fishing line” What the %$#@? I have been the only person driving that boat and I know I did not have a fish line in the prop.
Soooo, I contact an expert (iowaboy1) he tells me what he thinks it is and says it should be covered. I call the Merc Dealer on my lake, he pretty told me word for word what iowaboy1 told me, but also said if it it was a fish line it would be my dime.
I just got up to the cabin and called the dealer, he says all done Merc paid for it.

    Choose your dealers wisely!

No, No, No………..shop internet price. Drive several hundred miles to save 500 bucks. Nobody ever needs warranty or service work so why find a quality dealer? grin

Glad you got your situation squared away. waytogo

good to have friends in low places eh EPG??

so glad I could help you out on this one, there is no reason for a dealer to blame you out of the gate,it should have been stated something like this:

we will take a look at it to see what the problem is and we will take pictures of the tear down as it progresses,if its fishing line its on you,if its something else that is covered by warranty, its on us,fair enough??.
if it ended up being on you an estimate would be written and a decision made from there.

what gets me is the issue you had is a known problem with that seal housing in the lower unit below the water pump housing on that series of motors.
glad to hear you found a dealer that will take care of you ! I would of done it but that would of cost a whole truck load of Jack so for now, please remit one litre of Jack for diagnostics to iowaboy1 at……

This is just me,but if I have serious issue,i make certain I talk to the person in charge, not some clerk, not saying you didn’t,but I make sure I do! DK.

It’s nice to have an expert on speed dial.I would pay him his fee plus tip him another.I would treat him right you never know when you’ll need his services again.

I would of done it but that would of cost a whole truck load of Jack so

I did the calculation on that. If one were to stack the bottles neatly in cases using my fingers and toes as aids and with two fingers on the short side I came up with:
Thats a bunch of Jack, after the tenth round of counting I estimated to be a bunch. I feel it’s pretty darn accurate.
A litre pretty darn good savings if not the best I have ever seen.
I’m glad you didn’t say a but load. I ain’t got the tools for calculating that.

I should clarify,I meant a pickup load and my new ride is short box version.
good grief !! how big of a butt are you talking about !!!! the closest I have come to something that big is a gal I knew who had one so big she had to hide behind a mountain so the sun could come up !!

I have helped many people in need over the last forty plus years without pay and have always kidded, buy me a jug of jack if you think of it.
I pray it doent come all at once!! sheesh !! that would fill three olympic swimming pools !!
I can see it now,an IV in each arm,one bottle in each hand and a flat line on the screen but I would be smiling when I went !!!
ya’ll can drink the rest to celebrate the life of iowaboy !!

I will tellyou about the service I got on my last new boat. I bought it in Aug and used it thru Oct that year. Next spring I used it on the local lake with no problems. We went to Canada in June Wife and I went for a ride along the shoreline and saw several large muskies in a shallow bay. My son and I went back to try for them halfway there the motor locked up. Froze up tight. I was 15 miles from the camp and when we got back I found a local dealer. Called them and was told to bring it in. They dropped what they were doing and tore it apart while we were there. The guy working on it said a bearing froze up causing the lower unit to eat itself up. He went to the parts room and came back a short while later. They had most of the parts but there were several that they need and the main one was in BC Canada. They overnighted all the parts and This was Sunday and I had the boat back on Tuesday. The part that blew my mind is the owner came out handed me the keys to a boat they had in the water and said use it until we get yours done. This dealer got my business every year we went back after that. The dealer I bought the boat from in the states told me he could not have got the parts that fast

Fishing line will take the seals out of any motor. I just bought a Yamaha that had the same issue
