Just got back from a morning on the ice. I had good luck today as the fish were quite active. While everything was getting a bit slick from the freezing mist I managed to get plenty of gills and crappies to stink up a pan.

Hot pink and purple were the color, especially the solid pink. Waxies worked better than spikes. Fish were deep with 12 to 14 feet for gills and 20 for the crappies which were suspended about 6 to 9 feet off the bottom. Think you might be able to tell where I was for the gills. The crappie shown here was 14 inches and the gill was 9 1/2.

That’s a nice pair o’ pannies. Did all the snow of late put a lot of slush up on top of the ice? I was down in IA a few days ago and it was BAD in a couple spots on the lake we fished.

Ice is good up here, found a couple of slushy spots from holes but mostly it is perfect ice.

this has been a real hit or miss season so far, but it looks like the weather patterns are mellowing out for the next week and I anticipate a more consistent bite in the near term.

I have found the fish are more interested in less aggressive jigging. Letting the jig sit motionless or slowly falling is triggering the bites. Sometimes I let it sit for over 30 seconds without any motion and then they nail it.

Pete, are you back home for Christmas break?

I’ve noticed the same response to baits as you mentioned.

I am back in MN but will be back over in Menomonie late next week.

    Nice fish Darrin!

I finally got out yesterday, was very slow for me. Ended up in the cemetary and marked tons of fish-many lookers but no takers, seemed very similar for everyone around me.

Was out yesterday again and not much going on, Saturday morning should be good with the approaching storm moving in. I have had no luck in cemetary slough, they just aren’t active and I am wondering if the dissolved oxygen levels are too low in there. I would try just outside of the slough and around the corner by the shacks for crappies. My buddy Dan said he caught 10 nice gills on the southeastern shore across from the damn near the shacks where they dumped those 15 cribs last winter. The active and good sized fish are deep this year. Anything under 10 fow and they are small or just look at your bait.

Camp’s point is beginning to look like a city.
