trolling cranks

Got out yesterday and today to see how the crank bite was going. Friday late afternoon saw some fair action in 11 to 13 fow. A variety of species were hitting black/silver flickershad and perch colored wally divers. Pike and whitebass provide most of the action with some perch and small eyes mixed in. Speeds of 2.2 to 2.8 got the pike going. The eyes and perch were hitting at speed under 2mph.
Saturday was more of the same with the cranks. The 3 way bite kicked in a little better on Saturday, with more perch showing up in 13 fow. Silver blades with leeches.
here is a photo of our best pike on Friday.

    Good report Don.
Good to hear the lake is still going, how was the water?
Going to work on Friday (thought I saw your boat out there!) the water looked good.

The water is in pretty good shape for this time of year. the wind is keeping the surface clean. No issues with running cranks. Keep me posted on the bite, it may be awhile before I get back out .

Water still looks good this AM crossing the bridge, saw a wonderful spot that needs a crank run thru it! Boat may be in the water tomorrow after work!

I heard the drift bite was doing good on leeches and crawlers in 15 16 feet of water.

    Steve,
Not to pry—-ok, I’m prying-without getting into specifics, river, lake, channel?

I just heard drifting the lake. Don I think it was where we saw someone drifting last Friday when we were trolling cranks. I think out in front of Doc Trimbles old residence where the drop off is. That is a real long drop off or channel edge. You guys know where I mean. Hey if you can draw me a picture of the lake here I’ll put an x on it for you.

I like X’s on lake maps–do your X’s include GPS coordinates?!!!! Might get out tonight, older bro is coming up and if he gets here early enough, might get out to pull some cranks or harrass some gills. This high pressure might put a damper on things.

That’s good, cause I’ll need it! A buddy went out this AM and had a TOUGH morning, high pressure put the damper on everything. He did catch some gills, but few and far between. He worked hard for the fish he caught.

Went out Friday night and sat morning primarily trolling cranks. Very slow but we still boated a few fish. Pretty much everything we caught came outta 11-13ft of water. Our biggest eye was 17″ but we did stupid on an 18″ bass.

Thanks for the update. Pull a switchup on em, try snap jigging the same area you are running cranks .

Also do any of you guys have any luck going up the river at all?

Trolling cranks will boat a ton of pike up there. I will more often opt to toss jigs on the bends when targeting eyes.

    PeteyB,
Remember up river to switch gears. Esp. this time of year, look for any current breaks you can find as active walleyes (and other fish) tend to stack up.

    Don,
Do you ever drag jigs up in the river? I have never tried that–been spending too much time on the Mississippi, seems all my time on Menomin in the last 2 years has been on the main lake.

I usually go vertical or pitch, I have not tried dragging.
