I heard some good reports from people who hit the local pond over the holiday weekend. I did not fair too well myself so I will let the guys who caught fish chime in. I heard Steve did ok trolling and Doc Frigo had some dialed in also. I did find the smallies quite active both deep and shallow.

Saturday night went out with my little girl and caught some very nice gills. Some of the females still had spawn in them and were in the shallows, so it tells me the spawn is still progressing. A four year old catching a big bluegill kind of reminds ya a wenching a deep sea tuna to the boat! \

Mille Lacs by chance? That lake has been red hot and I am going to find a way to get over there this year, even if I have to thumb a ride! But I have to say, Pepin and the river have been good to me, well as the ole Pond.

Yep I’ve also been catching some of those 7 or 8 inchers which are nice to see. Thats going to be the future eaters in a few years. You got your boat here now and are all moved in?

Did really good Friday afternoon on the walleyes. All on cranks in 13 fow trolled at 2.8mph. All fish caught on the front hook. Once the fish were found, had 6-7 walleyes in the boat within 45 min.—had to go home due to being our anniversery and was already late for taking my wife out for dinner. Best color was silver and black with clown being a close second.

    Thanks,
    Jeremy

Nice fish guys, sounds like you had a blast. The anglers self impossed under 20″ is really paying off.

Great looking fish fellas! I need to get out on Menomin one of these days! I’ve never fished it but looks like a great time! Shouldn’t say I’ve never fished it…I’ve ice fished it but thats been it. Those pictures give me the itch to hit the water with the boat!

Has been a great year so far on the lake. Mainly, I try and keep the eaters and all else over 20 inches goes back.

Hey Don, I’m being lazy here and rather than look it up myself, thought I’d just ask… are there any special walleye regs on Menomin? It’s good to hear that voluntary ‘limits’ are helping the population

They have to be over 15″. Most that fish the lake on a regular basis release everything over 20″. Like I said , it is starting to show. We went alot of years out there catching 14 1/2 inchers. Now there are plenty of 15 to 17 inchers for the pan, and some real nice 20 to 28 inchers.
Targaman, glad to see you guys coming up and enjoying a great day of fishing and putting selective harvest to use.

    Kingfish,

Regs for Menomin state all walleyes over 15 inches being legal fish.
On a side note, seems more guys have just decided for themselves that keeping fish to eat is a great idea, but still conservation of the resource has to be kept at the forefront to maintain such a great fishery, thus some have self imposed a limit on themselves. There will always be pros and cons. Many, including me, at first fought the 10 fish limit for giller’s (my main reason was that many gills swallow the hook and rather than being kept, will be returned as turtle food since a guy could now keep only 10)but after dicussing the issue with some people whom were behind it, one of the main behind the scenes reasons was the vast amount of double bagging that was occurring and at least if someone double bagged now, it would only be 20 fish rather than 50! Of course, my stomach turned apon hearing that reasoning, but with the state of WI constantly tying the warden’s hands behind their backs by cutting their hours and resources, I could understand the point. I keep fish to eat, why? because they are yummy. But, my personal opinion is that anglers-all outdoorspeople for that matter, should respect their resource–that alone will help and make people at least a little more selective.
    Just my 2 cents.

I fully agree… even us ‘meat hunters’ need to follow proper conservation practices to do our part to ensure the fisheries remain healthy. I’d even go so far as to say that some selective harvesting is essential to proper ecosystem management.

I love a nice meal of fresh fish and I really enjoy going out and catching that meat rather than buying it in store! What burns my is seeing people pulling out more than a limit or pulling out fish out of season. I only keep what I need to provide a nice meal to friends and family and I don’t think I’ve had fish in the freezer for more than a week (even that is rare – we usually have a ‘fish fry’ that night!). I know there are people out there that have a freezer full of fillets, probably some that are over a year old! Why????

    Kingfish,
I agree with you. Taking some fish can be benefitual for the fishery. If you can, check out a recent article in the Sunday Pioneer Press (Sunday June 10, 2007) where the WDNR talks about largemouth bass in Burnett and Washburn counties. Basically, the article reports on slower growth rates in accordance to the current fishing practices and length restrictions—basically, too many bass in the system v/s forage base.
    Again, my 2 cents!
