Menards or Home Depot….

    Which do you prefer?

I recently got a Home Depot credit card for work use and remember why I NEVER go into their store…I’ve been there twice now recently for the first time in years.

Why do they stack crap out of reach? I wanted a few milk crates, they weren’t in isle 36 like I was told. After asking again it turns out they were, but just 12′ in the air on the third pallet rack. Then I had to circle the store to find an employee to get a rolling stair case.

I needed some #4 copper cut off a spool…an employee came by and said “someone will be with you shortly…”

Five minutes later I just cut it myself. The “assistant” at the self-checkout was irritated I didn’t have a tag for it showing the length and price, but I pulled my tape for her and showed her a picture of the SKU to calm her down.

I needed 8 sheets of 3/4″ plywood. I asked a group of THREE employees standing at the front door bullshitting together where the carts for it were, since there wasn’t any in the lumber section….and was told I would have to go back outside and get one myself out of the cart corral flame

Once I got to the plywood section, which is indoors and stupid, the top of the pile was conveniently 7′ in the air.

To top it off, the one and only employee who offered to help me was a bearded transvestite with with make-up, fake eye lashes and a fake/soft feminine voice with a “joyous dialect”. I’m not kidding or exaggerating one bit.

Home Depot sucks. The only good thing about them is their decent power tools, they can keep everything else.

If you went to forest lake home depot. They are awful. My company card is home depot and I hate that store. But they have alot of goodies in there. Just expect to find them on your own. My new washer and dryer came from there. Last years model for a 1/4 the price of new. While being brand new. I just had to puck them up. Saved over 1500 bucks

I’m a Home Depot guy. I will admit if I need to go around a corner with wood then Menards is my go to. I heard once somebody found some straight lumber there but I couldn’t confirm it.

I buy lumber from my local yard.

We’ve all heard the saying, “You couldn’t pay me to…[do something or go somewhere]”

The next time I go into Home Depot I’m going to make sure I’m on Over-Time. My regular wage doesn’t come close to covering the rise in my blood pressure. Even then it will still be painful to get paid to shop there doah

I prefer Menards primarily because I have a Big Card and they seem to always have their 11% rebate thing going. Plus I think they’re based in Wisconsin.

The 11% rebate scam is the greatest marketing thing since Sears started printing catalogs.

Can you shed a little more light on why?

Probably mostly because of habit. I know where things are and like the brands and pricing available. They also have the dog food brand I buy there and when they have the 11% rebates when I buy a couple bags, then I basically get a bag free with the rebates.

I don’t have any bad experiences at Home Depot, I just prefer Menards. But I will hit up HD when I can’t find what I want at Menards. Which isn’t often.

The fact people are actually answering the question gives me a chuckle. As if this post was an actual question.

Hope you feel better to get that out B-Man.

Every 2 or 3 years, I’m forced to go to Home Depot for something and am quickly reminded why I haven’t been there in years.

Only reason to go to Home Depot is for paint. Can’t stand that place. I’d pay more for the same product just so I don’t have to go there.

Show me where the mean trans person hurt you, bman! How dare someone employ that person!

Hate both stores for different reasons. Only go when absolutely necessary. Usually use my neighborhood hardware store as much as possible.

Was more the post…doubt it was actual question more likely a rant. Just an educated guess that he doesn’t really care what most prefer.

Because I like Makita and Milwaukee tools, I’ll go to the Depot occasionally. Random stuff would be Menards. Local lumberyards for materials. I’ll pay more, but I’ll get what I want.

If they both disappeared tonight, I wouldn’t be lost.

There are pros and cons of each place.

    Menards
    Pros:
    1) Selection. They don’t just have one broom to choose from but 15. 75 shower heads. And it’s like this for everything.
    2) Project Desk. Staffed by a lot of former construction guys who actually know their stuff. And actually all throughout the store they always have a full staff and people who know their department.
    3) Price. Hands down, Menards has good prices on just about everything.
    4) They cater towards the midwest and aren’t tied to having the same stuff in every store across the country like Home Depot does.

    Cons:
    1) As nice as their yard is to go pick up your lumber, a lot of the time I need to kind of be with the wood as I’m figuring out how much and of what size to get. A lot of times I am just not ready to stand at the project desk to list out what I need.
    2) a lot of their stuff is of cheap quality. A lot of their small engines, power tools, lawn furniture, etc. There are some things that I want to pay a bit more for, and besides the big brands, Home Depot’s Ridgid, Husky, and Ryobi are some pretty dependable stuff.

    Home Depot
    Pros:
    1) Often have really good prices on really good quality stuff — especially around Black Friday. I’ve gotten some really nice workbenches, Ridgid shop vacs, etc for really good prices.
    2) Indoor yard where I can touch and feel as I hem and haw over what to get for a project.
    3) Outdoor plants are of better quality and more selection.

    Cons:
    1) No one actually works there anymore, and that who do don’t know their department.
    2) Lack of selection
    3) Stock is often in disarray. This has gotten a lot better over the years. I remember when the chain first started, it was a trainwreck trying to find anything in their store. Nothing was every put back in its proper place. But it’s still not great.

General stuff I go to menards. If looking for name brand stuff, I will go to runnings, fleet farm or northern tool. I would even go to Lowes before home depot, but that is not often.

Home Depot hands down. It must be store specific. I’ve had good luck in St. Cloud and now Baxter. Was there today and had helpful people. Menards seems like a store full of cheap junk. Certainly don’t buy tools there, you’d be better off at Harbor Freight. Maybe I’m a snob, but I go to HD first. They are always sending discount coupons if you have a HD card.

    Neither.

Local Lumberyards often match prices if you ask, deliver it to your house, will set the materials on horses where you want inside or out, and will come to you to get extra returns with no restocking fee. They legitimately cull s*** wood out before it gets to you. Often times their sales people are retired/former contractors who come to your project to offer insight, measure, or deliver sample projects.

For tools I run Milwaukee everything and order it from Northern Tool, but have occasionally purchased batteries online from Home Depot.

Paint I go right to Sherwin Williams directly.

Miscellaneous garden stuff or yard stuff goes through the local feed store in town.

why is it a scam? their prices are usually better than HD, Lowes and any other retailer before the 11% even kicks in. I ordered a tub the other day from menards. same tub at HD was $145 more and I get an additional 11% off rebate plus points using my Visa.

But… your name sake? You’re Dutchboy, aren’t you an ambassador for their paint?! How can you say this?

I do get it,I’m generally not a fan of rebates, but where Menards really shines is the fact that when you pay with rebate checks you don’t pay tax on that amount, so it’s actually a bit more than 11% AND you can still collect the rebate even if you paid with rebate again furthering its value.

Get lumber from lumberyards. Not boxstores.
