If a person was leaving on Friday during rush hour from a southern suburb and heading towards, lets say Garrison. What would be the best route?

Bite the bullet and head up 94 to Rogers, up 169 thru the S#$t show of Elk River –

    Or

35 to 10 t0 65 up to Cambridge, over to Princeton then catch 169

    or doesn’t matter?

No good way. How about getting yourself on Hwy 65 and following that up to Isle? Not a good route but if you are leaving during rush hour you aren’t going to find a good route.

Use google maps. We can speculate on the best route, but only google maps can for sure determine it.

    I figured so.
We’re leaving Thursday but I have the Kids coming up Friday PM and just seeing if there’s an easier way.

If they come up Saturday morning is it any better?

Absolutely! Just tell them to get their butts outa bed and get going early (and I’m not talking about noon). If they leave between 6-7 and they will blow right through.

I’ve always thought 65 was the best option, but I wonder with 35W being reduced that maybe more people will spill over to 65 since that’s the next closest?

To get out of town like you are asking I would go 47 to 95 and cut over to 169. 47 is like most hwys heading north on a holiday but other than the stop sign at 95 they should still have a decent drive. If you stay on 47 up to mille lacs on a holiday weekend the traffic has got much worse in my experience.

On a busy weekend like that I’d honestly leave really early or you might as well just go really late after the chaos

100% agree,,,,,,,,, I have a friend I visit in Atkin. The very best driving time I’ve found is to leave early enough I am going thru the cities at 5:00am or earlier. I absolutely refuse to go thru during afternoon rush hour traffic. I’d sooner catch a nap, then get up and drive later that evening, but I personally don’t mind getting up real early to leave.

Yes, 494-94-101-169 is the fastest route. I’ve taken this route from south metro for over 10 years. The worse back up, mentally, is around Onamia when it goes to one lane. I go north of Atkin so I’ll jump on 27-47 on the east side of the pond.

But my arse will be like suggested and leaving by 6/7am Saturday morning.

How about leaving at 9 pm. I’ve always liked traveling at night versus the early morning. No traffic and much more awake and alert than in the morning.

I think that may be the best plan for the kids. It sure is nice to wake up at the cabin on Saturday morning. Seems like the weekend is much longer.

Just keep an eye on Google maps and leave around 8:00 or 9:00 pm.

No! I was thinking of going up around 8 or 9pm. Tell them to leave at 5pm with the rest of the hun-yucks. smile

Hwy 169 north of Hwy 610 through Champlin and into Anoka is a complete cluster-f*** right now! One lane both directions and traffic gets backed up. I would avoid it if possible.

x2. I’d also add that the worst traffic on holiday weekends is Friday afternoon. If they leave the south metro at 5-6 on Friday, most of it will be cleared out, the worst time, imo, is leaving around 2-3 pm.

Careful of the Hwy 65 Route: http://www.dot.state.mn.us/d3/h65isanti/

There’s some resurfacing and lane closures occurring. It’s been a real pain the past few weeks.

X2 – last 2 weeks one lane both directions. Miles of riding the shoulder rumble strips and dodging wet paint. smash

101 through Rogers, Otsego, and Elk River is seeing extra traffic because of the 169 closure. It was backed up last night and will be again tonight. I’ve never tried it, but you could head West on 55 to 25 in Buffalo and then take 25 North to Pierz or even further North and cut back over towards 169.

Yup. I hate intrusive technology but Google has got traffic figured out. Never been wrong for me.

FWIW, I’m leaving for the Bowstring area early Saturday morning to avoid the hassle. I just hope the bait shops will still have bait Saturday morning!

I just kicked A$$ on all my paperwork today, I really can’t believe I caught up. A couple easy appointments tomorrow. Got the lawn mowed, changed oil in the Truck, got the slow leak in the trailer tire patched, new trolling motor is on the tender.

I’m officially mentally checking out from work for the weekend right, right, wait for it —————————————————————————–Now! woot

If anyone is heading north of Deer River, be mindful that a small stretch of 46 is closed with a detour going around Ball Club. I can see that getting hectic.

FYI, yesterday they had one lane shut down in each direction for about 7 miles just North of Princeton. Will it be open by the weekend? I don’t know.

Also just south of Onamia they had “road work ahead” signs up but nothing happening yet when I went through.

No matter how you slice it traffic will suck this weekend. cry
