Anyone got some recommendations for one ? Looking for a rod for my wife to cast some pike lures ? Seem like they are not easy to find in store to test how actually heavy they are.. To be fair the Scheels medium rod we have her now has landed multiple 32-38 inch pike on the river with no issues . Just time to upgrade some equipment. Must be spinning rod !

also the tatula rebate is still going on so you can send in the receipt for a daiwa-simms hooded sunshirt.

How much are you looking to spend, does she have a length she prefers, and what is her favorite lures to use?

I have been looking for a budget MH rod as well. Going to be used for throwing bigger swinmbaits (up to 5″ on a 1/2-1oz swimbait jighead) and ripping them out of weeds. The Tatula seems like a good option

I have a G-loomis e6x and a st croix mojo bass my sons have a st croix bassX and a fenwick hmg. I prefer my mojo bass but I think the HMG is a little on the heavier side so I would recommend that for a pike rod. We are more bass fisherman but we have landed some bigger northers and I caught a 39” musky on my mojo bass last year and the rod did well.

Scheels stuff is good enough and not too spendy.

7 foot is what Id like , under or around 100 bucks although the 40 dollar rod has put alot in the boat. 1 oz daredevil is usually the go too .

I have a MH fenwick HMG but it is a baitcaster and I really like that rod for heavier spinner baits like 1 1/2 and up to cowgirls.

I really like the Falcon Bucoo line. Most of my rods both casting and spinning are these. I have medium light, medium, and medium heavy spinning rods and really like them. Good prices for these rods too. You can get them with micro guides if you wish, I like these especially for braided line, keeps the line from getting tangled around the guides. The micro guides are a pain to thread the line through though, especially in low light. Made in USA too!

BP has a decent rod for around $120,it’s the white carbonlite rod.
I’m not a big fan of BP\Cabelas but i bought it about 4yrs.ago on a sale and i hate to say but it’s a nice rod.

Fenwick eagle or hmx. She is casting a daredevil for pike. Get a semi durable rod for cheap. Sensitivity has nothing to do with that style of fishing. Don’t need nothing fancy for that style of fishing. Just something durable. I wouldn’t spend over 100$ for that style of fishing. If that was what if was used for 75 percent of time I would not spend more than 75$ JMO

they have stepped it up in quality I have heard. I bought one recently to try out this summer… but it was on a steep discount from a rep so little different.

I like my fenwicks, scheels, dobyns rods etc on a budget, but the tatula I linked feels like a $120-140 rod all day, and durable. Whatever you get, definitely go 7′ for casting pike lures- more rod to fight the fish with and longer casting distance.

May I suggest looking at a crank bait rod or something similar if her favorite pike bait to toss is a 1 oz Daredevil. Crank bait rods have a softer mid-section allowing a crankbait to have a bit of a pause from the side wobble. Or in the Daredevil, when the spoon pulls to the side it would have a slight pause as the blank loads, then it unloads pulling the Daredevil to the other side. This pause does generate more strikes and a better wobble. The softer midsection does decrease sensitivity. But that should not be a problem with this style of bait.

Do they make med/hvy crankbait spinning rods? I use moderate or mod/fast for my crankbait rods and couldn’t find a med/hvy so mine are all medium.

Sorry it’s exactly what you’re not asking for but I just have to say it’s so much easier and more enjoyable throwing spoons and baits like that with a casting set up. If she can cast spoons with a spinning rod she can absolutely do it with a casting rod… Just make sure you set it up right for her.

Croix makes (made?) Legend Glass Spinning which is (was?) a whole crankbait series. Really any medium power – moderate action rod is a crankbait rod.

Agreed, far more efficient with less effort and more control. Spinning is not the correct setup for that.

The OP did indicate spinning though.

While I do agree the ergonomics of a bait caster setup is probably better – she likes the easy of spinning rods . She hasnt been fishing her whole life like the rest of us – Ill take whatever makes her happy and continues to be on the boat .

The Fenwick HMX has been mentioned a couple times. The HMX line of Fenwick rods were eliminated in 2023.

Fenwick totally revamped their line of fishing rods so they now have four models of rods.

I have been using the 13 fishing (Omen Black) spinning rods in MH for a few years and really like them. Great rod for the price. Should be able to find one at or under 100.00. The MH comes in 7’1″.

The Falcon Bucoo hasn’t been made in the USA for years now. They’re decent rods though. I’d go for the Tatula XT or a Fenwick in this price point

Have no brands to recommend, but when I am eyeing up rods in the store, turn it upside down and push on it against the floor, look at the flex and taper. Do that before you go with the rods you have, it will help you judge beyond what any given rod is rated for. Medium Heavy has become an enigma in the rod world, look at the OZ rating, with braid who cares about the line. You have to feel the bend, imagine the cast, and setting the hook on your target species, before you choose.
