Anybody else miss the classic meateater format? Steven Rinella as the host, just doing what he does? Out there hunting and cooking what he shoots, while showcasing a true appreciation for the outdoors with passion and sincerity?

I miss those episodes, man! He was — and I’m sure still is — a great representative for all true and ethical men and women of the outdoors.

His podcasts on his own or guesting on Joe Rogan are all awesome. I understand he also has to branch off for the development of his brand and also probably wants to enjoy his own free time. Just curious about the rest of IDO’s opinion.

Meat eater is by far my favorite hunting program to watch. Steve is a great teacher and I appreciate his passion for the outdoors. We as a family watched the show at dinner forever. We only have Netflix and Hulu, so I’m not sure if there is new episodes that your talking about with a new setup

Hey Ron, I just have YouTube on my phone, no streaming. I just mean the old format of Steve being the main guy without all these co-hosts and spin-offs. I love that you and the family watch it at dinner as a tradition. I always get hungry when I watch the cleaning and cooking lol

That’s about the only hunting show I can stand to watch. I like how everything doesn’t need to be a trophy and he eats everything he kills

The show is still the show and I’m sure there will be a new season on Netflix soon if they follow the timelines they’ve been following the last few years.

And I REALLY like the YouTube spin-offs and the personalities of the rest of the crew. Some of them I’m not as into like “Duck Lore” as I’m not a duck hunter, but I still watch it because it’s well done. I find the recent spearfishing thing they’re getting into really fascinating and it sounds like Kimi Werner is getting her own YouTube show about it under the MeatEater Umbrella.

They’ve found the formula to relate to the common outdoorsman. Most of the hunts you see, anyone could go on with the right prep and tag draw. They’re not hunting over some feeder or high-fence property– most are public land hunts. And they seem like dudes you’d find at any deer camp, drinking and BSing with the boys. Love it! I’m about to start in on this week’s podcast…

OH – and I LOVE MeatEater Trivia!

Very cool show. I also have been watching some of the Dead Meat shows, that one is ok too.

I follow the podcasts more than the show itself. They have great guests and good conversations. Trivia is a hoot too. I do really enjoy tony peterson on the wired to hunt podcast also. He grew up hunting MN public so I do appreciate his insights.

I lost a ton of respect for Rinella when he sold his company to Churnin group. An outspoken anti 2A company. I guess I can’t blame him for wanting to make a buck but I will no longer support him with my time viewing or purchasing from first lite or other meateater brands

I definitely go back and forth on this. I love all my FL clothes, and for merino base layers and early season archery whitetail/elk gear I don’t see myself changing, but will slowly be updating to Sitka moving forward I think.

I for sure preferred his show before he started getting money from different companies and pumping their products (Weatherby, Prime, etc.). Sort of made the show and the brand lose their luster for me seeing everyone coming out with “Meateater edition this” and “Meateater edition that”.

Any of you youtube-only guys watch the Hunting Public? I know it’s been talked about on IDO before, I haven’t been able to catch up in awhile with all my life entails with 2 very young kids but I really enjoy that show.

I watch a lot of Meateater content. From a cooking standpoint I think the show has sparked my curiosity in trying new ways to cook wild game. I have always liked how some hunts do not end in a kill. It shows a little more realistically how a hunt can go as apposed to other shows out there. I think from a learning standpoint and realistic hunting aspect “The Hunting Public (THP)” is probably my favorite youtube content however.

    I’ve always enjoyed the guy.

His new book “Outdoor Kids in an Inside World” is a pretty good read, especially for parents who might struggle with the idea or think it’s too hard to accomplish.

I didn’t realize he sold out, that’s a bummer. I do have a few pieces of FL clothing, which have been quality so far I do like meater content, especially the trivia and podcast. Tons of cool and informative topics discussed. THP is great as well, they are very detailed and put out tons of info for the average Joe to be successful.

I don’t watch the shows often but listen to the podcasts occasionally driving back and forth from cabin. Mainly Wired to Hunt and the main Meateater one. I also listen to Beargrease sometimes if I really need to kill some time lol

I think so, he goes to different areas and harvests game and fish and cooks it. I think he is a chef. The last episode they killed jack rabbits and some weird eel looking fish with teeth and ate them.

His shows are great though there is no way I would eat half the stuff he does. He did an episode at Eelpout Festival a few years ago. As you can about imagine it was full of drunks LOL.

I love THP. It is the most realistic hunting show out there in my opinion and one of the few that you actually learn from. Most shows are pretty unrealistic and are hunting private and/or with guides. THP actually teaches you how you can do it on your own on public land. Highly recommended for those that haven’t seen it. They primarily hunt deer and turkey but also have also started adding elk in occasionally.

THP is easily my #1 hunting show, and there’s not a close second imo. Well edited, tons of great content and applicable to the everyday (whitetail) hunter.

Meateater was great, love Rinella and have some of his books and merch. It’s definitely gone down hill after they were acquired, as they try and cast a much wider net to develop additional revenue streams. Plus their articles used to be excellent, but now are redundant with half of them being clickbait “Which is the better caliber…” type stuff. Das Boat is hit and miss, I had higher expectations tbh, but will be interesting to see if Jay Siemens has a bigger role as he’s done a few different things for them now and I think he does a great job.

Meateater seems to be more private land or super difficult to draw tag centric the last few seasons, which is a bummer and also creates a misconception that what they are doing is possible to everybody. I love Rogan and Cam Hanes, but their type of elk hunting falls under the same category. Unless you want to pay 10k or apply for a decade, those hunts covered up in multiple monster elk just ain’t happening on an OTC or yearly tag public land hunt with regularity.

Amen Big Werm. Plus Meateater is pretty much always hunting with a guide of some sort. In my opinion, its not that impressive if you film a hunting show with a guide. You are pretty much just portraying your video editing skills more than hunting skills in that situation.

Is this a new thing? I have never seen Steve use a guide. I am not real familiar with the newer stuff because I just keep watching the old reruns over and over again.

Maybe he doesn’t and I am wrong, but the episodes I’ve seen (older ones) he is almost never by himself. Usually he has something with on the hunt. They may not officially be a guide but that’s how I’ve interpreted it.

He many times has other people with him, but they are never a guide that I have seen anyway. Unless you are talking about the exotic trips he has done then he is usually some locals, but to call them a guide might be a stretch. Usually its buddies, his brother or even MeatEater staff like the 2 ladies that hunted deer and elk who never hunted before.
