Meat fish…

Ma and I got tired of snow so we went to Puerto Vallarta to visit friends who live there. While there I rounded up a local to take me fishing and Carole and I spent a morning 11 miles out in the Bay of Bandaras in 28 foot skiff in 11 foot rolling seas. Quite an experience. The local used ZERO electronics and put us on fish using visible landmarks and feeding birds.

We trolled one line with a tinsel fly /sardine and the other five rods all were larger Rapalas with the hooks removed and a leader and small silver spoon tied on the rear hook hangar. Everything was trolled about thirty to fifty feet back in the boat’s wash. The sardine rig got the attention of a shark and a feet of line disappeared at the hit. Next a King Mackerel hit and for a smaller skinny fish that sucker sure did not want to be caught. I caught four Bonitos ranging from about 4 pounds to eight pounds and these suckers give a new meaning to fight. I was worried the 40 pound mono was not enough.

Ma and I kept the Mackerel at the bottom of the picture and the larger Bonito. We had three great meals of fish. The Bonito are cousins of the tuna and taste nothing like of fish but more like pork. Absolutely phenomenal eating. The creature-lie critter in the picture is a relative of the lobster and the guide was quick to put that in his pail. The sardine is about half a pound. We saw dolphins up close and personal while out on the water and nine whales were right up close too. This jaunty out on the ocean was really a great diversion from all the bustle in the area. I’d look this guy up in a heartbeat should we get back there again.

looked like fun. Tom where did you stay? not trying to be nosy but I seen a while back that was a place to try and avoid due to the crime there?????

we went there years ago as PV was just getting established as a destination. the guy I was with and I went down to the pier/docks several times looking to maybe go out but the catches at the time weren’t very impressive. we went 2 years late again and man did the prices jump!!!!!

We have friends that live there Glenn and we stayed at Paradise Village, which is a gated community, just to be near them. Zero crime there, but we traveled into the old town and while it was not modern as we know it there is apparently little crime there now. But then only the cops and military carry guns there….and the drug cartels. The cartels don’t bother tourists. The military and the heavily weaponed police are visible big time in the old town. We were in places where I guess I would not choose to go by myself but there was never a time where I felt unsafe.

I did get to see Bill Gates moored his yacht…. which likely cost 25 mil and a helipad complete with helicopter. There were several yachts in the price range.

84 was the “average” high temp for the week we were there. 67 was the lowest temp at night I saw. Cloudy one day and no rain. The only ice I saw was associated with a drink….and that was the plan when leaving the ice behind.

Bonita are very underrated fish. That looks great.

We are in the air to Puerto Rico and I’m dragging some gear down. Have a Tarpon charter early next week.

I’ll post if I catch anything.

Enjoy the rest of the trip Tom!

Yeah, werm and I might try and meet up Tuesday. Our trips cross over for a couple days. I’ve always had good luck down here Tarpon fishing. It’s not a trophy fishery like the Keys but I’ve had some really good days.

Are those Bonita also called skipjack? Our trip to Mexico we were told they were awful table fare.

Somebody gave you bad information. We did ours on a grill and it was fantastic.

Skipjack are different from what I understand. I don’t think many people keep Bonita though.

Let me tell you, a 10# Bonita on a medium spinning setup is a riot.
