22 years after losing the NFL single-season sack record, Mark Gastineau confronted Brett Favre for ‘taking a dive’ on the record-breaking play.

Pretty sad when you watch the video. Favre’s statement he released on the incident hit the nail on the head though.
Gastinaeu played in an era where guys didn’t create generational wealth so on the field accomplishments meant a lot more. You can see how much that record meant to him and how it defined his career.
CaptainMuskyPosts: 23746December 12, 2024 at 8:31 pm #2304663Does brain damage factor into that behavior ?
My sources say yes exacerbated by roids. Feel bad for the guy but that’s embarrassing
December 12, 2024 at 8:46 pm #2304669I didn’t watch the video. Favre took a dive on that sack for sure. Makes Mike’s record seem hollow.

For sure .
December 13, 2024 at 6:23 am #2304685For sure he took a dive, and the tackle who was tagged with ” giving” up the sack was not too pleased as a side note …

Was gonna say the same thing. He had to take a dive after the tackle just left Strahan have a free runDecember 13, 2024 at 8:16 am #2304697It was a total planned sack for the record. I think Brett realizes that it negatively affected Gastineau now. I remember when it happened and thinking… geez, talk about planned out. I doubt Mark would be on Good Morning America…. then again, maybe Brett did him a favor.
December 13, 2024 at 8:30 am #2304704he’s always been nuts, but he has a point in terms of Favre just giving away his record…I remember watching that game, you need to earn big milestones like the sack record, not just have them handed to you..
December 13, 2024 at 8:59 am #2304717Favre took a dive for his buddy. And Gastineau was on roids, on top of doing nothing but rushing the QB. Here’s the real Single Season Sack leaders:
1. T.J. Watt, 22.5 sacks (2021)
2. Jared Allen, 22.0 sacks (2011)
3. Justin Houston, 22.0 sacks (2014)
4. Chris Doleman, 21.0 sacks (1989)
4. Reggie White, 21.0 sacks (1987)Gitchi GummiPosts: 3258December 13, 2024 at 9:33 am #2304726Favre took a dive for his buddy. And Gastineau was on roids, on top of doing nothing but rushing the QB. Here’s the real Single Season Sack leaders:

4. Reggie White, 21.0 sacks (1987)Seems pretty subjective. How do you know none of the other guys on the list were on roids? Also, Watt’s number should have an asterisk since it was a 17 game season and everything else on the list was accomplished with 1 less game.
BrittmanPosts: 2165December 13, 2024 at 11:14 am #2304741Deacon Jones. His number of sacks per passing play is believed to be off the charts. Passing plays are 2X today than they were in the 60s and 70s. Couple that with they were not tallying sacks when he played. 14 game seasons to boot.
December 13, 2024 at 12:49 pm #2304769What does Mark G have more of – Sacks or months in jail for domestic violence? Guess that’s all I really remember about the guy was popping up in the news with another charge against him. I remember him having a long winded excuse about how the use of steroids was why he was so violent towards women. Did he think Farve was female??

December 13, 2024 at 1:07 pm #2304774Guys! This whole scene is made up. Is it coincidence it was a ESPN camera that caught the exchange between the two retired players? Is it coincidence that ESPN’s 30 for 30 airs tonight titled The New York Stock Exchange about the Jets defense?
In my opinion this is just a bunch of bologna promoting the show and I am sure there might be some payoff for Gastineau and Favre.
December 13, 2024 at 1:21 pm #2304777I am pretty sure Gastineau will arrive at the premier aboard one of those Jersey drones.

the scene that everyone is referring to between Gastineau and Favre took place in 2023. It is just now getting press because of the premiere of the 30 for 30. No coincidences or conspiracies. Its marketing and seems to be working quite well
How is Straehan not on here? I thought Allen came up 1short behind him in 2011?
That is not the official single season sack record list. That is BigWerm’s list he made up where he chose to remove certain players based on his own perception.
The official list, regardless of your opinion on the Favre/Strahan sack, has Strahan and Watt tied for 1, then Gastineau after that.
December 13, 2024 at 3:01 pm #2304806Yeah that was a complete joke. Strahan should have an asterisk next to his number. I could sack an nfl qb if he lays on the ground a foot in front of me.
December 13, 2024 at 3:01 pm #2304807I’ll hold back on judging Gastineau completely.
He has dementia and has openly admitted that he struggles to function doing day-to-day things and deals with fits of anger over it too. I’m sure in that instance (in 2023) seeing Favre probably did make him angry. I’ve seen what degenerative brain diseases can do to peoples’ impulses and ability to control anger whether appropriate or not. It feels kind of cruel that this year old interaction on camera is now being thrust to the forefront in the name of marketing. I’d bet if Gastineau was interviewed on camera today for any length of time, people would quickly realize the condition he is in.
Gastineau will be added to the list of growing NFL greats who have CTE, it just cannot be confirmed until after someone’s death.
ThunderLund78Posts: 2796December 14, 2024 at 9:22 am #2304906I wasn’t going to watch this, but it was on at McGovern’s last night in the background with no sound – I couldn’t help but look while I was eating. The visuals really brought me back to the good old days and sucked me in. So I’ll probably find it on-demand and watch it now.
