Marine Radio Location in WX2060

Looking at adding VHF radio to my 2020 wx2060. I’ve got 2 helix12s on the console on ram swing arms so no room to put it there.

Wondering where folks have mounted them and what they’ve used for antennae mounts (a quick detach option would be nice).

Thinking gimbal mount on passenger dash and grabbing power from radio but would need to verify fusing.

Any installed pics from folks that have done this would be very much appreciated.

Take a look back on my posting ” my new WX2200 almost done with rigging”, there is pictures there of my vhf mounted in dash. I supplied the vhf and detachable antenna, and the Boat center ordered a back bracket for it. Radio fit perfectly in the stock dash inset. 2060 should be identical as 2200. Was a really clean install, and they couldn’t believe how perfectly it fit in there, and it was the first time they installed a detachable antenna like I supplied. They told me it went so well, that they stocked a setup like mine for future installs. What ever you install, make sure you get a detachable antenna. Wife made a rod sock for mine so when its not being used, you can store it in your rod box.

I have a 2200, I mounted mine on the top of the passenger side dash (to the right of the glove compartment). I felt it was too large to try to fit something else on the driver’s side dash with all of the various electronics and I wanted the dash cubby open for various odds and ends. This location also made it quick and easy to wire the antenna on the passenger side, keeping it off the drivers side of the boat. My antenna is not detachable but provides me with good range.

Detachable or not, has no effect on the range. As long as you get a good detachable in 8′ length, your range will be the same.

Thanks for the feedback. Think I’ll go your route Musky. I looked around to find the compact vhf you have and everywhere seems to say it’s discontinued. I’ve found others that will fit in that dash cubby though. Those detachable antennas are spendy but makes the most sense for me as I fish inland lakes quite a bit and be nice to take it on/off when I’m on/off lake superior.

My antenna, 8′ Shakespeare quick detach, was about $100, they also made two higher end models for about $250 or so that have a slightly better signal. As to the radio, yes they make changes all the time, but they have many different models, and hopefully one would have the same apx dimensions. It is really nice and out of the way mounted in dash. I would not want it on passengers side if I had a choice, as you will be changing channels when talking to friends and others, and when sever weather breaks in and changes the channel on you, you need to reset it back at times. Also You will be changing the volume at times, especially when the weather broadcasts with it’s blaring volume. I’ll look and see if I can find the dimensions for my radio as it was a really good fit. May not be till monday though, as I am not by my boat now.
