If I have a two bank charger can I charge just one battery if I need to. What I’m thinking about is maybe using the charging system on the boat to charge a different marine battery.

You’ll almost need to look at the directions and what the manufacturer recommends. It could go either way and without knowing the brand and model, it would just be a guess and you could end up short a bank.
April 4, 2019 at 6:58 am #1848216Not sure what you’re going for here, but why would you NOT use both banks? Connecting both would assure that both batteries are fully charged. If one battery doesn’t need charging, most chargers would switch that capacity to the battery that is low.
April 4, 2019 at 7:58 pm #1848437What I was talking about Ron was to charge not the two batteries but the one for cranking over the engine.Only one battery for that.

April 5, 2019 at 7:00 am #1848489I find it very odd that a charger would not charge unless all banks are connected to a battery. I would not buy one like that.
If say a bank dies, a connection comes loose or a battery fails, it won’t charge the other batteries? That’s a recipe for disaster on so many levels.

Unfortunately that wasn’t really an option not too long ago for a lot of chargers. These chargers are getting smarter. Before they begin charging, they “inspect” or test the battery. Some chargers figure out which bank is the lowest and will charge that battery the hardest. If you left a bank open, it wouldn’t be able to complete its test cycle and therefore couldnt figure out how to charge.
I noticed the newest cabelas advanced angeling charger NOW allows you to hook up all extra bank leads to another battery. So, if you have a three bank charger but only two batteries, you can now connect two banks to one battery…but all still need to be connected for the charger to work.

Still doesn’t address any of my concerns above. Good point though. Read the specs or the manual before you buy.
