    Hello,

Looking for a potential 1st flasher. I have been a tip up guy for years, but would like to get back into jigging a few times a year.

Given that: a. it is not going to be used much, and b. I’d like to limit the price. as well as time learning how to use a flasher…

Is there any reason I should not start with this unit?

    Thanks.

I would look at the Marcum VX1, I believe someone on IDO has a new in box VX1 for sale currently. I think the VX1 is superior to the showdown for various reasons and is budget friendly.

Nubbin – showdown or the vx-1 or lx-3tc would all be great starter units easier on budget and ease of use. 👍🏻

Can you expand on why the VX1 is a superior unit, for occasional use?

Just because the TV IDO guys use Marcums doesn’t meant they are the only good units on the market! I have the Vexilar FL-20 and it performs just fine. Look around before you commit to anything.

I don’t think you could go wrong if you found a vex unit like the fl8 or the fl18.They can be found used around 200 bucks, some more some less.Either one is a good entry level flasher.I have one of each the fl8 is 15 plus yrs old and never been in the shop. The fl18 does have the zoom feature. The Marcum vx1 would be the equivelant.I am not sure but I think farm&fleet and fleetfarm have the fl8 on sale.

You cant go wrong with any of the above sonars. My take and coming from a guy who owns the following sonars: (yeah i have a problem)
    LX7
    Showdown 5.6 dual beam
    Showdown ice troller 2
    LX5
Humminbird 788ci converted in the winter for ice fishing use

I find myself using the Showdowns more and more. They are easy to use I dont have to look a circular dial to try to figure out the depth. Easy to read in bright light and at night. And phenomenal battery life. I think the SD gets overlooked because it is not color and is not as “sexy” as the other color units on the market. Sometimes I start with the Sd troller 2 and just finish the day with it never breaking out any of the others.

Dont get me wrong I love the LX 7 but sometimes i enjoy the simplicity of the Showdowns
    Good Luck

I have the Marcum Showdown Troller 2.0. I love it, however, I did just pick up a LX-5i. The showdown was a good starter for me when I was on a budget however it would be nice if it was not monochromatic. I opted for the LX-5 because I love the color separation and I needed two units for my household. That being said the showdown works great and is awesome for hole hopping especially if you use AA’s it is super light. I do have a 12v for it and it is a bit heavier but not too bad.
