Marcum recon 5+… go or no?

Okay, guys… I run an lx7 and I am thinking about the camera. I fish Lake Erie walleye and inland panfish. I understand that the 5+ records and has direction NSEW. Is this a solid unit or who else should I consider? I’ve seen some footage from one poster on here that was impressive. Is clarity usually too poor to benefit from the camera? There’s too many days where the flasher is lit up, I go through the whole tackle box and the curiosity/frustration makes me want to see what I’m missing. Also wonder if there are better fish lurking with the dinks? Looking back life was easier when all I had was one rod and a five gallon bucket!

I like mine so far. the depth reading seems to not work on a consistent basis which is irritating but all in all it does what I want. Its my fist camera so I cant really compare it to other models in terms of how good it is. during the day id say I can see anywhere from 20-50ft depending on water clarity. at night maybe around 5ft.

I like mine a lot. I’ve used it a bit every time out this year and it’s helped get on fish or see what the deal was, well worth it IMO.

My charge indicator near the USB port doesn’t indicate a full charge, but the on-screen battery charge status works and is more useful. I’ll drop it off for repair sometime.

It’s nice to see why your buddy isn’t marking or catching fish 5′ over from the fish superhighway you’re on. hah

I’ll have a comparison video up tonight (might be late) from yesterday.

As I’ve said before, hole hopping the Recon 5+ is the way to go. If your sitting in a wheelhouse where there’s room and the monitor is (or can be) set back from the angler, your better off with a large monitored VS485, 685 or 825.

On a side note Dtro was on Mille Lacs this weekend and was watching his flasher. A mark came on the flasher and followed his bait up a ways then fell back down. Using his camera, I think it’s an Aquaview.

Turned out he was working on catching a cray fish. )

Is clarity usually too poor to benefit from the camera?

That’s a tough question to answer.

If you can see your jig if 15′ of water, the camera will see that far. If it’s June on the Mighty Muddy Mississippi the fish will have to run into the camera head to be seen.

The question that answers your question is: How far can you see your lure in the lake you’re fishing?

The Mississippi is the dirtiest I’ve seen it at this time of year due to the rain and melting snow.

    Here’s the video.

My depth reading only worked the first time out. I tried resetting the default settings and unplugging and plugging in the camera cable as suggested by Marcum.
After 4 more fishing trips it would only ready 3ft 30ft down. I’m sending it back to Marcum and they are sending a new unit out. They said first time hearing about depth not working on these units.
I love the unit all in all though. Perfect size with tons of options

that’s interesting. exact same issue mine has. Worked the first time out and since then it will only read 3ft regardless of what depth im in. I may need to put a call into marcum

I sent an email to Marcum. We will see what they say.
