anyone know anything about these units? I cannot find anything about them. Are they new? Marcums website lists them as out of stock coming soon but tackle warehouse is selling them for $299. they look really portable and slick. Will be buying an underwater camera this year and was hoping to get some info on that one and see if it should included in my list of choices.

I got my first chance to handle them at the Thorne Bros event when I was there for ICE FORCE a few weeks back. It wasn’t in the water but I was very impressed from what I saw. I think this will be going on my list for Santa this Christmas whistling

just bumping this up again to see if anyone has had a chance to have one of these in the water yet and can give a review. I plan on getting one in a few weeks but would love to hear what people have to think of theirs.

I’ve used one a bunch this summer in the boat. For a compact unit the Recon has a very good display and image quality. In the past I’ve always carted around my LX9 in the summer any time I wanted a camera in the boat. While it worked well it took up a lot more space than the Recon does.

Here’s a video on the Recon cameras that basically sums up their capabilities.

Should have mine delivered in the next couple days. Very excited. I did have a C-Fish camera which I liked. It was big and bulky and took to much time to setup.

I’m also interested in the recon 5’s. I try to be a multi-purpose kind of guy whenever possible and I see a lot of possible applications that a small, portable, tethered, on-screen display camera like this could be used for outside of ice fishing. I’m into planted and reef aquariums and you could get some pretty sweet shots of your tanks with a camera like this and with the 5+’s micro SD storage you could edit together some nice videos.

For hunters you could use it as second pair of eyes, or a trail cam of sorts, when you hear a critter behind you and can’t move or for a direct view down a trail or something. You could even mount it to your blind or stand or a tree for that matter. With a 50′ cable you have some camera placement options. I know it’s not a super HD setup but I think it would work better than nothing if you like gear like that.

Even if you just liked to mess around with making and editing videos, I see a lot more than just an ice fishing camera.

You could probably do most of that with a regular fishing camera too, if you even had the inclination to do so, but good luck fitting one in your hoodie pouch or a cargo pocket.

With the way technology and portability is progressing, It helps to get the most out of a product and thinking outside the box can help justify a purchase sometimes. At the very least help persuade the spouse lol.

The 5+ definitely fixes the missing part of the Aqua-Vu Micro by adding Direction and a heavier camera. I would highly suggest spending the extra money for the 5+ and get the Direction. It will save so much time drilling holes in weed beds.

can you talk more about how the direction feature benefits you?

It helps determine which direction to drill your next hole if you can see a rock or a pocket, 1 hole instead of 4.

Yes for me I thought the recoding feature was nice but the direction is the number one reason I spent a little more and got the 5+. Just like Dustin said if you drop the camera and can see fish or weeds or structure your looking for you can see right on the screen the exact direction it is and cut that way. Without it you either have to pull the camera up slow and try not to let it turn on its way up to see the direction it’s facing or just guess and check. Another really nice thing is the depth read out. I really utilize that when I am trying to see suspended fish that I found on the flasher and I can watch the depth as I drop the camera and know when I am close with out dropping the camera right threw the school.

I picked up a 5+ this weekend at the Kabeles Shop with the Pros Event in Spirit Lake, Ia. Brad Hawthorne had his there and insisted I messed around with it (and twisted my arm ALOT! Lol) and ended up pulling the trigger on it. I can’t wait to put it to use!

I can see how that would really aggravate me to not know what direction the camera is pointed as what im most excited about for using this is in locating structure. guess ill need to get the 5+. Glad I heard it here before I bought though

I was wondering if any of you purchased the unit and if you like it? Also if you bought it is it easy to point in the direction you want?

I used my Recon 5+ last couple of days and it’s really good. The direction of the camera and depth readout on the screen is awesome. I fished a few different lakes and the clarity of the camera is great. Well worth the money in my opinion.

Great! Thanks for the response. Thinking about getting one. I already have a marcum flasher and they make some good products.

I’m leaning toward getting the 5 plus and dug up this old thread. Lots of people on here who seem like they were in the “thinking” phase last year….any of you who did get the unit care to share what you think?

I just picked up a 5+ off craigslist a week or so ago as I too was in the “thinking” phase last year. From playing with it in the house, looks good. I’m not sure it’s MSRP good, but for what I paid I’m happy. Excited to get it under the ice and see how things look on the lakes I typically fish.

After a full season of use on the ice it is now one of the tools I won’t go on the ice with. That said it isn’t a tool I actually use every time, but its so compact its easy to fit about anywhere. The majority of the times that I was using it was to locate panfish in shallow water especially around weeds. I would just burn a bunch of holes and then put the camera strap around my neck and just move hole to hole looking for fish or structure and I could do it all while standing so I could cover more water quickly. I did do a lot of down view fishing with it as well especially after I found panfish living in shallow weeds.

There were several days that I fished most the day with the camera on and I don’t recall ever having a day that it went dead on me.
