So I have a marcum lx-1 I’ve used for a long time and it has work well for no troubles at all, last year went up north fished 20+ fow for crappie and I’m unable to see my jig, power turned up same thing , new battery same thing, so I’m gonna buy a new one. So my question is will a lx-3 do the trick or does a guy need to get into a lx-5? Or does the new marcum vx-1 do the trick, the deepest I fish is 30′ most of the time 25′ or less. Not a vexilar marcum debate just looking for advice on these units, my marcum has served me well for 10 years so not looking to switch brands!

I am gonna try a new one, so one should be able to see jig in 20+ fow?
January 9, 2016 at 11:19 am #1590996I had the same thing happen to an old zercom colorpoint after about 12-15 years.
I went to an hbird ice 45 and now an lx9. I would get the unit you can best afford.
ponyexpressPosts: 45January 9, 2016 at 3:45 pm #1591034It could definitely be the transducer. I had a buddy that borrowed an fl8 last year and had a hard time seeing his lure at all. We swapped my the transducer from my fl18 to the fl8 and it worked great. We ended up running back into town and got a new transducer and fished the rest of the day.

were you able to see your jig in over 20′ for the ten years you owned it? I would sure hope so I’m pretty confident you’ve developed a bum ducer and a quick call to marcums customers service would have you going in the right direction.
January 9, 2016 at 4:34 pm #1591049I have only fished deeper water with a small jig a few times to tell you the truth! Fish shallow water most of the time.
January 9, 2016 at 7:46 pm #1591076Gregory-the 1 is the only marcum I’ve never owned. but I would think you wouldn’t/shouldn’t have any issue seeing that jig in 60′ depth’s,hopefully someone that owns one will chime in here eventually. but like I said before a simple call to marcum’s customer service can have you back on the right track catching fish with this unit again.
January 10, 2016 at 9:49 am #1591134I have the LX6, it happens every once and a while. Sometimes I turn the Sensitivity level up. I also wiped the bottom of ducer off and it worked great, even though I didn’t detect any foreign matter on it.

I’m kind of a geek this way, but I always carry spares and regularly switch ducers. I even have spare transducers coiled away and sealed in my boat.
January 10, 2016 at 7:29 pm #1591309I have used my vx-1 for the past five years without a problem. I finally upgraded to an lx-5 only because I’m doing more perch fishing in 60’+ fow and the vx-1 is terrible over 60′. You have to turn the gain up to 8-9 to find your jig but then it’s just a big red blob near bottom with no target separation. That being said, if you only plan to fish 30′ and under, the vx-1 will work great for you. I’ve never had a problem and routinely out fish my buddy with his fl-22.
January 11, 2016 at 11:03 pm #1591740Picked up a new transducer and just like new again, and I picked up a new lx-5I just in case and didn’t work out.put it to work today and both units worked flawless.
