I’m looking at taking a short trip somewhere on the weekend of March 12. I want to keep it within a 6 hour drive from the metro. I am open to targeting pretty much any species, I really just want to catch a bunch of quality fish. I have been thinking about the Ely are for trout or LOW for walleyes/sauger, but I’m also open to targeting panfish.

So , if you were to take a trip at this time of the year where would you be going?

I’d push the trip out 3 weeks and hit LOTW with tip-ups for late season pike :).

Either way, I’d probably hit LOTW I think. Close second would be hitting Ely for trout, just depends how much you want to catch.

Drive the extra distance and go to Lake Winnipeg if you really want to catch quality fish.

If you choose a border lake you can fish walleyes, pike and trout.

Mid-March walleye fishing can be fantastic on LotW ice. We go most every year.

If you decide on Ely for trout crappies and gills let me know, I’ll point you in the right direction.

Dan when we were in NE South Dakota last weekend they told us March is usually awesome for really big perch as they’re moving shallower. You have a real tough decision to make grin
