Managed deer areas regs?

    The regs state the following:
    Managed Deer Areas—
If you hunt a managed deer area, you may take a deer of either
sex. No application for an either-sex permit is necessary.
In the following areas, firearm, archery, and muzzleloader hunters may take deer of either
sex on their regular license and purchase bonus permits to take antlerless deer:

Question: Based on this reg if I purchase an bonus firearm permit today and I took a doe earlier this week with my primary firearm license, I am only allowed to take an anterless deer with the bonus permit. I cannot take a buck now that I have used up my primary firearm license. Am I understanding this correctly?

If I go and purchase an archery license, I assume I could take a buck via archery with that license?

I was hoping to take my 7 yo daughter out hunting tomorrow for the first time (evening sit for a couple hours), but I would want to focus on taking a buck in the small chance a nice one came along (haven’t seen one yet during shooting hours, other than on camera).

You are correct. If you did buy an archery license you could shoot a buck but them would not be able to use your bonus license because you can only shoot two deer in a managed area.

    Are you sure DT?

Once you use your primary license you cannot use another primary license. Only one primary license of the archery, firearm, and muzzy license can be used per year. You can buy a bonus license and use that for an antlerless deer in a management or intensive harvest area. This is my understanding…

I can’t find where it would say that. If you look up rules for managed areas it says you can use any combination of licenses and bonus permits to shoot your 2 deer. The state limit for bucks is 1.

I see what your saying, just seems odd that if you shoot a doe at any point in the season you could no longer take a buck in any other form of hunting.

I guess I will reach out to the local CO to see what they say.

I’ve been through the regs twice since my post and I can’t find what Sticker is referencing. Obviously your best bet is to just call.

I called the DNR helpline and they said I can take an archery buck as a second deer to my firearm doe.

Probably should have just started there instead of wasting everyone’s time here!

I can’t find anything on it either, but I swear I emailed the DNR about this before. Maybe I am wrong, wouldn’t be the first time. I am emailing them again. Now I have to know.

Say you shoot a doe in that area with your main firearm tag. You can no longer shoot a buck with a firearm license, but you CAN shoot another doe with a bonus tag if the area you’re hunting in allows it. Now you go out and buy a primary archery tag, you CAN shoot your buck with that tag. No where in the regs does it say anything about only getting to harvest a deer on one of the primary tags, but it DOES say you can only take 1 buck, regardless of how it was harvested. You just need to be mindful of the overall bag limits in your area and state-wide. DT is correct.

I have ran into this issue in the past and contacted the DNR for clarification. But we all know how that goes, guy on the phone says one thing and the guy emailing says the other…

So you guys are saying in the metro no limit area I can take a deer with all three tags, archery, firearm and muzzy?

Yes, that is the way I read it, however only 1 buck.

Metro deer management area (deer permit area 601)
    • The intent of deer permit area 601 is to increase hunting opportunity around the Twin Cities to help landowners and local governments control deer populations. The area is nearly all private land and access is limited.

    • The season dates are:
Archery: September 16 through December 31
    Youth: October 19 – 22
Firearm (Statewide A or Late Southeast B licenses are valid): November 4 – 26
Muzzleloader: November 25 through December 10

    • At the time of license purchase, hunters should indicate the area they typically
hunt during the regular deer season. The license is automatically valid in the
    metro deer management area.

    • An unlimited number of bonus permits are available for use in this area.

You could take 9 doe with each weapon of choice if you really wanted. Just keep buying bonus tags!

Disease management tags is really what they are called.

$2.50 each. Good for doe only.
    Only good in cwd zones.
Of course you can buy bonus tags also but that’s expensive… Especially if your out of state

    1 buck statewide.

The bullet points I put up were copied strait from the regs book for area 601 (metro deer management area). I am pretty sure these are not disease management tags.

BTW, my daughter did join me in the stand! I was thrilled that she joined me and got to see a doe come through slowly (I think I saw 1 deer over many years when I was young).
