I’m on vacation Nov 1 -9. I’m headed to SD after trick or treating tonight. First order of business, put as much steel in the ground as possible. Hopefully my buddy and I can get all the traps out on Saturday and finish up with a few Sunday after we check. Then the bow hunting starts followed by some coyote calling. Throw in a Pdog shoot and a few beers, it’s the making for a great week.

I’m chomping at the bit! Can’t wait to get on the road and head down to SW Wisconsin for the weekend chasing after some stud whitetails. The deer have been moving, the best time of the year is here!
November 2, 2014 at 6:42 am #146938045 traps set yesterday. Its Xmas morning now. Hope to get another 30-40 in today. Then the wind needs to switch so I can start archery hunting.
November 3, 2014 at 9:45 pm #1469969Day 3 update – Jeff has set 60 ish traps. So far 2 coon, 2 badgers, 4 skunks. Oh and a half eaten muskrat. Haven’t bow hunted due to wind. Tomorrow AM is my first sit though. Can’t wait to check traps after.
November 4, 2014 at 4:22 pm #1470249Great day so far. Jeff arrowed his biggest buck to date. 2 more coon, another badger and a muskrat.
I missed a nice deer this AM. Hoping to redeem myself tonight.

November 4, 2014 at 4:43 pm #1470265We also got a few roosters. Lastly Dave in our group shot a buck this AM at Jeff’s farm.
November 5, 2014 at 9:04 pm #1470647Day 5 – another badger, coon, muskrat and a civet cat. I passed a nice buck at first light and I missed a couple roosters. It was another great day other than the high winds.

Kooty, Kooty, Kooty. Are we going to have to spend a little time on the range before we hit northern MN in December?

November 5, 2014 at 9:44 pm #1470664Love the pics of the Badgers. I see their dens when I’m out hunting waterfowl in the Dakotas. Was thinking this last time out, boy I’m glad I never come across them.
This is Man’s week on steroids! Nice work.
November 6, 2014 at 7:11 am #1470704That place is varmint central! Can’t wait to hear some stories when you get back!

November 6, 2014 at 7:44 am #1470715They keep dancing all around the pans. Had a couple pull out so Jeff tightened the pan tension a bit. Today is the day! We gotta have one.
November 6, 2014 at 12:29 pm #1470791Well today wasn’t our day again. We had tracks on 3 sets. Tweaked them a bit and crossing our fingers. Jeff did fill his doe tag though and we finally got a coon in a dog proof. We have been pretty pessimistic about them over the last 2 seasons.

November 7, 2014 at 3:44 pm #1471169Today was another slow day. 1 coon. We started pulling sets only leaving some canine in for Jeff’s and my Dad to check. Winds gusting to 50+ right now. Hoping it dies down as the sun sets. Did just spot my first deer though. Oh, also shot some pheasants today. That was a challenge in 25 mph winds.

November 7, 2014 at 11:18 pm #1471300Well, we are down to the finish line. So many great things happened this week. The biggest, my friendship with one of my oldest friends continues to grow stronger. We fell short on our list of To Do’s but with the short days and trying new things like putting up fur, killing archery deer and cutting them etc… We simply ran out of time.
I was able to arrow this buck tonight after having a couple bad experiences this week. Once again, I’m firm beliver in the Nose Jammer. My battery died on my Ozonics but this buck still came in. I double lunged him at 7 yards.
Now, if we can just call in a yote tomorrow AM and get one in a trap. It will be an EPIC week.

November 11, 2014 at 11:47 am #1472158Man week lives on… Even if we aren’t there. Jeff left a few traps out for yotes and his parents are checking daily. We got our first coyote yesterday in a dirt set over a buried skunk. Hope to get a picture today.
One of my favorite pics from the week. Great circle this devil made.

Did you guys shoot both bucks out of that box blind you built? Or did you have some traditional stands as well?November 11, 2014 at 4:24 pm #1472304Jeff got his out of ladder stand we have had up for years. Mine came from the box blind. They were shot about 7 miles apart. I had opportunities at two bigger deer out of my box blind on Tuesday but screwed them both up. That’s a story for another day though.
November 11, 2014 at 6:39 pm #1472344Good reading John! You sure know how to make a guy feel like a little kid tagging along…… wondering what’s next! Glad you had an awesome time out in SD and congrats on that buck! Thanks for sharing your summaries and photos!
November 11, 2014 at 7:23 pm #1472361Great read, congrats on the antlers, the fur & the feathers. Great bucks.
November 13, 2014 at 10:28 am #1472914Well, we finally tricked a yote with a dirt set over a buried skunk. It was two days after we left, but Jeff’s parents are still checking traps on their land. He is a bit stiff and snowy since they put him down during the blizzard and didn’t retrieve til the next day.
Hopefully the peat moss he bedded the traps in keeps them from freezing down and we somehow sneak another out. I learned a ton watching Jeff this week and now I find myself looking for trails and sign more and more when I’m in the woods. Wish I had started trapping when I was a kid.
