Picking up a yellow male on Saturday. He’ll specialize in pheasants but will also hunt waterfowl. Give me some good names. I’m tying to think of something pheasant related but I’m struggling.
    Spur?
    Rooster-Roo
    Runner?

    ?????

Definitely do not have anything with Rooster in it. He will be confused whenever someone yells rooster and meaning to shoot at a rooster and he will associate his name with shots being fired so every time you yell rooster he will think someone is going to start shooting.

For hunting dogs I heard to use a 2 syllable name with hard consonants so it can be heard over the ambient noise.

We’ve got a great list of names here that are easy to yell and simple to say.

…I’m adding most to my list to bring to the wife for our third child’s name

Trigger, Gunner are two of my favorites. I had a chester once too. I don’t think I could name another dog gunner because he was just too damn good.

    backstory on Rufus –
    circa 1968
first dog that we ever had as a family
probably mutt – was uniformly “yellow” with short length hair
    loveable with kids
    ferocious hunter

sadly he was poisoned by a neighbor due to his hatred of dogs

if i can dig up a pic, I’ll post

Absolutely disgusting! If you were able to prove it I hope justice was served.

There’s just an opportunity with dog names to knock it out of the park when you get it right.

Picture a name you can hear yourself yelling to your dog in the field. I always love regular people names for dogs. Like Frank or Paul. Imagine the fun stories you can tell about your dog Eddie and people might not know you’re talking about a dog!

Totally agree. Especially old-school people names that aren’t common anymore. Bonus points when the name matches the appearance or personality of the dog.

A few that I have met that I thought were especially fitting:

    – Stanley – Lurcher
    – Mortimer – Irish wolfhound
    – Duncan – Scottish deerhound
    – Oliver – Black lab
    – Astrid – Black lab

Our dog came pre-named, but it would be fun to pick one some day. Good luck.

Our current dog ( a shtzu ) got his name on the way home from picking him up. I stopped at a C-store to pee and bought a candy bar on the way out. Unwrapping it I looked at the dog and said ” He’s white, caramel, and chocolate, I think we should name him ” Snickers”. And so it is

All mine have have come pre-named and all have been changed.

My once in a lifetime dog was “The Senator” a giant Brindle Mastiff. As a puppy he was Buffalo, which btw would have been good also.

Man come on! If other people name him it won’t be special!!!!

I did that with my last dog and she ended up with the most common female dog name in the world. Don’t get me wrong she is special but think of things that are yellowish or related and go from there. Ozzy? Tanny? Sandy? Yellie? “Old yell-her”? jester

Sorry couldn’t resist. Dog names are tough! ??? tongue crazy

Male- maybe emoji(emo for short)? No, that’s bad.

Hayfield? No that’s way too British/farmish.

Limestone? Too hard for a name and too brittle to hold up.

Sandstone? Too long and also soft.

Nevermind, just get a black or a chocolate…

In all seriousness, just name him jack or piper or something. He won’t give a sh*t as long as you feed him.
