Picking up a yellow male on Saturday. He’ll specialize in pheasants but will also hunt waterfowl. Give me some good names. I’m tying to think of something pheasant related but I’m struggling.

Buster. And make sure he’s never in range.

Ha. Good one. Doubt if the wife will approve it- but that’s good.

Go with a tried and true name if you’ve had previous dogs. We had x3 different dogs Hank 1-3 growing up. People probably frown on that nowadays, but I liked it

Personally I like a dog name with 2 syllables because most of the commands for my spoiled house guest are 1 syllable. Sit, come, stay, down, off, no.

The Latin word for pheasant is phasianus. The scientific name for the common pheasant is Phasianus colchicus, where colchicus is also Latin for “of Colchis”.

We just had to put our dog “Sioux“ down a week ago. I’d name the new pup Sioux again but the heartbreak with the family might still be too fresh. We’ll see.

Wife named ours “Beau”. I said ” Why would you name him with a word that rhymes with NO ?”

Bo, or Buster. I like simple dog names, and everyone has a Remi or Ruger, plus it’ll confuse the four million millenials named Ruger or Remi.

Traditional dog names are always fun, but if you’re going to be hunting with other dogs and needing to command them, then common names can cause confusion.

Picture a name you can hear yourself yelling to your dog in the field. I always love regular people names for dogs. Like Frank or Paul. Imagine the fun stories you can tell about your dog Eddie and people might not know you’re talking about a dog! rotflol

“Sonofabit…!” while sprinting toward a barbwire fence after a hen.

    Or, Piper.

    Rufus

We had to put our Lab down just over a year ago. Our little girl has a stuffed animal dog she named Rufus. No clue how she came up with that but that dog goes everywhere and does everything with us. When the time comes to another pup there’s no doubt its name will be Rufus.

for ease of training and to avoid confusion, I prefer 2 syllable names that don’t sound like a training command (examples Beau and No, Otis and Over, Jack and Back, etc). It has to be a name that isn’t hard to yell and more importantly, not hard to hear. Have a buddy stand 100 yards away from you and yell names. You will find that some are much easier to hear than others.

Perazzi – Lord knows good dogs are expensive. Might as well have a name that fits!

Back when I was a guide at a game farm some clients wanted to run their own dogs which was good by me. I found the most common names were “god damit” and “Fu@ker”.

Sorry for your loss, Dirk. A new pup is just what the doctor ordered. Good Luck!
