Making the most of your boots

Not ready to invest in a pair of ice boots yet, so my 1000gram Irish setters will have to do. Been on the ice several times with them now and no matter the temp, after having the feet on the ice too long they get cold from below.

How does a guy make the sole warmer? Felt inserts? Air cushion inserts? Did the nylon sock, with a light wool sock over today and it kept very warm, better than usual, but again after some time in the hub feet got really cold.

    Any ideas? Much appreciated toast

I have the same problem, only cure is to walk around if needed. Some use those hand warmer packs,I would think feet would get too warm, and sweat.I try not to sit in one place too long.

Put a board down or a piece of stryofoam underneath your feet while sitting in hub.

This is another reason why new boots aren’t in the cards. Figuring out a floor of some sorts has to be dealt with.

Concerned with a trip to Leech in a couple weeks with my Dad and his new UTV and Otter 2man. Suppose I could bring some foam with then as well.

I keep 3 pieces of 3/8″ plywood in my 2 man portable. 1 for each persons feet and 1 for under the heater. Putting one under the heater keeps the heater from melting the snow or ice. A thin sheet like this really does wonders under the feet and wood won’t blow away like foam. 16″x 24″ is a pretty good size. Throw them in the bottom of the tub when you pack up and they take no space.

Take a look at my video

I have a board that I cut to the length of my sled and it fits perfectly in the sled and I use it to lay down on the skirt of the house and I put my feet on it. WAY better than putting my feet directly on the ice! All I use is 1000g Irish Setters. They do the trick for me, match them up with some wool socks and I’m ready to roll!

Carpet samples are your friend. I keep several in the back of my SUV at all times. Perfect for lots of uses, including standing on the ice.

I bought a 3’x5′ piece of rubber restaurant kitchen floor mat. It keeps your feet off the ice and is light enough to roll up and throw in my sled. Works great.

For me, its my sweaty feet. Some antiperspirant spray and it goes a long way. When I don’t spray, sometimes I warm up the feet by the heater, or rather dry up the wool socks. I just warm them up enough so that no more steam is coming from my foot. I’m just wearing a 600 gram hunting boot.

A metal paint tray fits perfectly under the Sunflower heater/cooker frame and will reflect the heat away from the ice. you can bend the sides down over the frame a little and it will keep it from tipping over.

Lacrosse sells felt insoles for $8 in all sizes men and women. Picked up a pair at Reeds in Walker to add to my irish setters with 1600 gram thinsulate. Made a huge difference. Feet never got cold rest of the weekend in 20 below in the otter.

I’ve found that a small rug or piece of carpet makes a big difference while in the shelter. Good luck and be safe out there.

On the cheap, a pair of military surplus (aka Mickey Mouse) boots are incredibly warm! Fleet Farm usually has them pretty reasonably priced.

When your feet get cold just change socks while the ice, keep your extra set in a gallon size zip lock baggie.
