Major decision to be made.

For a long time I have been wanting to move away from the urban sprawl that has taken over my area. Now, I have an opportunity to get away from this but its in Missouri. Small simple town on the Platte river north west corner. Simple life rural area. Just focus on me and friends and the small community. None of this political poop. Spent Christmas through new years down there. I like it.

Be kind of odd looking from the outside to see the lake shore ASSOCIATIONs rule where and how you can launch a boat while I can carry my rifle and my judge next to me in my truck.

I grew up in northeast Kansas, small rural community and there are definitely somethings I miss about it.

Funny thing is that I did not recognize the wealth of fishing opportunities that I had. Now I make 1-2 week long trips back each year to fish and see friends and family.

    Good luck with your decision!

Thanks Ryan, the fishing part is going to an adjustment as I will be leaving the St.Croix river from my back yard. I wont miss the tuna boats. Nice to hear the fishing opportunities. A bit of traveling is ok by me.

Why is the only place you could do this in Missouri, just outta curiosity?

I’ve been in plenty of small communities that were rife with political BS and drama. Hopefully for your sake this one is different but the lake association alone sounds like trouble.

You will laugh at what they think a busy lake/river looks like!

What’s the closest city? I didn’t realize the Platte River was in Missouri. Always thought it entered the Missouri River on the Nebraska side.

There are a few power plant lakes in Kansas that you can fish year round no matter what. Lots of reservoirs in Iowa and Kansas. Lake of the Ozarks, Truman, etc… in Missouri. Then of course the Missouri River that you will be close to and the Mississippi River if you drive to the other side of the state.

A place is a place if it feels right that’s where it be. It could be anywhere. I just know I need a change. Mn will be where my heart is. After losing my dear pup Almeta and all my close family the last year and a half it’s time for change.

Do the change just don’t tie up all your cash in case it doesn’t turn out and you wanna come back. Missouri has nice areas but I found it pretty humid in the summer. To each their own. Hope it works out for ya.

That is one thing I don’t miss about that area. The heat and humidity is so much worse than up here, but some people prefer that.

Just focus on me and friends and the small community.

This is what resonates with me. Real community is super valuable, really something we have lost in modern times. I wish you the best.

Aside from the above I have something to bring to the community. Game plan to produce a product that’s sustainable and beneficial to all that’s already there.

I lived in STL for 5 years and enjoyed it. Small town MO is pretty redneck and aspects of it are awesome. If you want to avoid “political poo” you better be very red.

Difficult decision to make. Only you will know if its the right one to make and you may need to spend a few months to a year down there to have your answer. It sounds like you have had some losses here recently and a change in scenery and some new areas to explore can certainly help to revitalize. I wish you luck whatever you decide. AS I traveled through Missouri the trailer homes got bigger, the closer you got two St Louis. True!

I have always liked Missouri as I have lived farther south, get a change of seasons but nothing terrible not like up here an occasional ice storm but in a couple of days it`s melted. Depending where you pick to go some counties and taxes can be very reasonable compared to up here.

Good luck to you and hope you the best, and me personnely have no problem with people that live in mobile homes some of the greatest and nicest people I know have lived in one.

Nice area. I’ve been there. Stone Canyon Pizza in Parkville MO is a must visit. You’re just far enough outside of KC but close enough to get to the big city and have some fantastic BBQ too. Fiorella’s Jack Stack BBQ in Martin City MO has the best Burnt ends I’ve ever had.

Go for it. I’m back home now but I moved 8 hrs away once. I loved it. Being so far away from family sucks, kids don’t get to see family and it just wasn’t home.

I have a friend with a year round 2nd home in Shawano, WI, population of 9800. We fish there several times each year. Wonderful place and wonderful people. I live near Chicago and am approaching retirement. Places like Shawano are looking more and more appealing.

A few years ago I relocated to New Mexico. Had spent the previous 20 years in small town Iowa near the Mississippi. Now I’m in a city with about 90,000 people. An adventure for sure. Now I head to mountain lakes and chase trout.

Make the move and enjoy the change in lifestyle.

Just a word to the wise on the location, I hope you are aware of the extreme flooding in the MO River as of the past few years, seriously!

My brother lived in rural Kentucky for a decade. Absolutely gorgeous but they will peg you as an outsider immediately. Be nice and mind your P’s and Q’s (not that you need to know) and you’ll likely find an amazing community of people willing to help you out.

Yep I’m aware of that. The house I’ll be staying in is on higher ground so I’m good there but when the water is high were locked in a couple days till it goes down. Were aways from the Missouri 30 miles north of St.Joseph but there is a small river called One Hundred and two river that runs by the town that floods.
