Magnum 49cc III Plus Auger issue

My Father has an old Magnum 49cc III Plus auger. He had it serviced about a month ago (cleaned up the carburetor) and it was working fine (just took about 10 pulls to get it started when cold but once warmed up it would start in a couple of pulls). Last weekend, we drilled our first hole and were halfway through the 2nd when it just stopped. The pull cord seized up so we cannot pull it to try to start it.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

    Jon

Unfortunately it doesn’t sound good. If the cord is seized up so you cannot pull it over it sounds like the piston has seized in the cylinder. Did you have the work done by a reputable shop?
I would pay them a visit.

Sounds like it ran lean and seized. Any chance raw gas made it in the auger?

The tank was low but it was the mixture to it’s specifications (24-1 on that particular model). The gas used was non-oxy. It looks like it’s going back to the shop.

Sounds like it had been running fine I would not be quick to blame it on the shop that worked on it. It has probably drilled a good number of holes in its time and maybe just gave up the ghost.

10+ pulls to get her started when it was cold but one when it was warm sounds to me like the piston and rings were shot resulting in a major engine failure.

I guess to me “running fine” is longer than 1 and a half holes as suggested in the original post. I didn’t blame it on the shop, but if the work had been done there and they were the last to lay hands on it you can bet its going back for them to take a look.

    Update:

Took the auger back to the shop that tuned it up and as was suspected by the posts, the piston seized. They said it was cheaper to buy a new ‘Strikemaster’ as versus fixing it. It did it’s job for 20+ years, now I’ll have to figure what to replace it with. Thanks for everyone’s input!

Hey, if you are interested a buddy of mine has a newer Magnum Auger (not a solo) with a lazer drill that he is will to sell. He just bought an ion and wants to get rid of it. He just put a new carb on it and the drill itself is only a couple years old. He says it runs like a champ now.
PM me if interested and I could get you in contact with him.

Thanks for the offers! I spoke to my Father and it sounds like he’s probably going to replace it with an ION. I appreciate all the feedback & replacement options!
