I have no clue about the area you live in and what kind of madtoms are available there.
We have Willow Cats up here in MN. It’s a species of Madtom. Too small to use as an effective catfish bait. Further up North on the Great Red River of the North they have a species of Madtom that has the size of a cat bait.
Not all madtoms have position in their spines, but you might want to be careful with them. Our Willow Cats are around 2″ long and I personally know of two people that got stuck with a spine and they became REALLY sick. I’ve heard of others going to the ER.
