Hey guys does anyone fish Madison lake? I fish it more in the summer and I do well. Anyways I was out there last night on the ice and I caught some crappies off the DNR access in about 19 FOW but my question is why cant I get them to Hit a jig? I have tried everything from VMC Tungsten Tubbys all the way to spoons tipped with minnow heads. I still caught fish so im not too worried but I prefer to catch them on the jig. Any info helps. Thanks!

I used to fish that lake extensively when I lived in the area. In my experience, there are better lakes in the area to find some bigger fish. Many times out there was like fishing another small, deep lake about 10 miles north-east of there. Lots of marks checking out the bait and very few takers. Very light jigging until they come in and check it out and then let it sit is about the only way I could have success out there.

Summer spinners for Walleye is a different story out there…40% of the time it’s an 8″ crappie, 55% of the time it’s a drum and 5% or less is an actual Walleye.

Austin, when I lived in that area I only fished Madison on the ice during ice out, in the areas you alluded to.

Fish are fish man… They just went through a f’d up week in February.
I fished Saturday and Sunday without a single bite.. So it happens bud. Though the river changed much more than the ice, there was still a hectic change to the fish recently.

Stick with it. Fish do not want to bite some days. Run through all your lures and don’t be too discouraged. Sometimes other folks aren’t doing any better on that day

Where were the crappies this past fall on Madison? Caught one 14 incher, but never more that two. Did put a beat down on the Walleyes though.

Im not so much discouraged as I am confused. I can go catch nice crappies on jigs in plenty of other lakes. I was just wondering if there is a rhyme or reason to them on this body of water. I don’t know where the crappies were in the fall. I hammered them all spring and summer trolling crappie tubes on the edge of the weeds but when fall came I was fishing Cannon for walleyes and shooting mallards lol.
