M18 chuck issue

I have the M18 fuel hooked up to a lite flite 8”. I just got the drill about 8 days ago and I’ve run it on 4 different trips. The last couple times out I’ve had a problem with the chuck slipping…not the clutch engaging but the chuck teeth slipping on the adapter of the auger. When I inspected it this morning the chuck teethe where stripped flat, no grove left. Has anyone had any issues like this? I have the drill set on low power and on the drill function. I returned the drill and got the new one already, just wanted to see if this was a common issue or not.

I’ve experienced similar issues except I have a K-drill. I wore down the bit on my k drill last year and they replaced it. You want to make sure that you have the chuck and the bit perfectly lined up before you start drilling. On the k-drill there is 3 straight edges on the bit that align with the 3 grooves on the chuck. I’ve found that once you have it set up correctly just leave it for the rest of the year because taking it on and off constantly is what is going to wear down the bit.

Ok so instead of just “powering” the chuck into place, use my hands and line it up? That makes sense. I figured it was operator error! 😂. Thanks for the info!

Yup. That’s what I do, hand tighten the chuck and then make sure that it doesn’t slip after you start drilling.

Does the adapter that came with your Lite Flite have a round “collar” on the end that goes in the chuck or is it ground down more to a point? When I got my Lite Flite a couple weeks ago, the adapter had that round collar that prevented the chuck of my drill (Ridgid Octane) from getting a good grip on it.

I emailed Steikemaster and they shipped me out a new adapter at no charge that didn’t have that collar and also included a plastic bushing for the bottom section of the adapter (presumably to reduce wobble) and a new screw.

If you have issues with the wobble as many others have, you may want to email Strikemaster and get the updated adapter. The poor design of the adapter could be what shredded your chuck.

I have the one pictured. Those instructions sure help though. I was inserting the auger just like a drill bit by powering the chuck closed and not paying any attention to how the teethe landed on the adapter. Thank you both for the info, it’s much appreciated. I didn’t want to take a second drill back with a torn up chuck.
