LX7 user wondering about LX5

So I have been using the LX7 this year. Love it. However, when hole hoping it seems like I have to dial it in every time I change holes. I’ve used the manual, auto, etc. It’s not a huge deal but can be inconvenience. I’m dabbling with the idea of getting an LX5 to use when hole hoping outside my Otter when I am “finding” fish. I used an FL-18 before and liked the ability to just be able to drop the transducer in the water see what I want to see. My understanding is the LX5 can do this even better.

    So my question:

Am I a fool for thinking this would work?
Am I a fool for going from LX7 to LX5 when hole hopping?
Would I be completely disappointed using the LX5 after using LX7?

(In addition) I would like to get another flasher as I have people that fish with me that don’t have one and I think the LX5 would work.

The LX-5 is a hole hopping SOB. No adjustment necessary.

The LX-5 is one of the best overall units on the market. i dont think you are a fool to consider this flasher for any application

The LX-5 or even the LX-3tc, The 3 is cheaper and if you like the changing cone angles then the 5, They do everything the same minus the cone angles which imo doesn’t make much of a difference.

I have the lx5, been using it for a few seasons. And let me tell you, that thing is a BEAST. Whether you’re hole hopping or just sitting inside the house, it never let’s you down. Instant visibility of what’s down the hole as soon as you drop it in.

I run two LX-5’s, but have not used a LX-7 on the ice. If you are fishing a break and hole hopping, there is a chance you will have to do some adjusting, but nothing that would take more than 10 secs. This past Sunday I was fishing a break of 15 -25 feet. Because I want to utilize as much of the dial as possible, I would move the depth setting back to 20 feet when fishing the shallower part of the range. I was also using two different lures, so I changed the sensitivity when flipping back and forth as well. For the amount I ice fish, these units have served me well.

Even with setting it to ‘Dynamic’ you are still having trouble?

The LX5 Is a absolute awesome unit, for hole hopping. And fishing in a house. Whoever fishes with you will be more than happy, and might not want to give it back to you.

Thanks everyone. Yeah, I’ve had a little trouble with dynamic. When the unit is in dynamic it “flashes” at times or there is a quick “delay”. Doesn’t happen in the other options.

    Hi Ryan:

I’m a big fan of the LX-5 and the LX-7, but I tend to use the LX-5 more out on the open ice when paired with a Lithium Ion battery. Aside from its size/weight, I just plain love this unit. I’ve had a great history with this machine, and am tuned in to its nuances. The LX-7 I end up using more in the house as I’m more stationary and I certainly do appreciate the large screen and infinitely customize-able features.

Never feel like you’re “downgrading” by fishing any of the Marcum analog flashers, there’s some serious power in those units.

Thanks Joel! – Yeah, I’ve noticed on the show you tend to stick with the LX5 when you are hole hoping. Enjoy the show every week!

Just one more plug for the LX-5 but this probably applies to any modern flasher. I can tell when the wax worm “skin” falls off my tiny gill pill. I cant imagine better than that. I know the LX-6/7/9’s are the best there is and offer awesome features but I have no incentive to replace my LX-5 right now while it still works.

I will say I have the lx7 and it is a bullet proof unit for me the last couple years. I also have owned the lx5 and I really like it as well. I had a small issue with motor failure Marcum took care of me. I would take either unit at this point I liked the 5 that much. I do hole hop and fish outside more then in a shack and I have zero issues trolling the ice with my 7. I don’t run the latest update and have no issues with readings. You do have to adjust your zoom from time to time when hopping hole to hole if you walk a ways between holes and depth changes. My lowrance is the same way. For a second unit the Lx5 or Lx3tc or the vx1 pro all are a great choice.

I have the 5 and bought the 7 last year. I will not ever sell my 5 I like it that much. The 5 is a great unit. You won’t regret getting one.
