Horrible news but assuming they had overnight guests that’s pretty incredible no one was hurt or killed. Don’t think I’ve actually been to the lodge, is that the one right on the lake where the Poplar dumps in?

I saw this also. The article I read stated that no guests were at the lodge, but a few employees were.

Apparently this building has burned down before too. The cause is unknown.

Sad news. What history. Lutsen claims to be the first resort in MN.
Skiied up there several winters in the 80s. Stayed in the lodge and the townhomes on the “mountain”. Also stayed in the Sea Villas on a family vacation. The alpine slide was fun. The bar in the main lodge was called the Polar Bear Lounge. It had a small dance floor and was fun. One year after my group partied at the ski chalet on a Saturday night, the next day they said our group set records for liquor/beer consumption. shock applause toast crazy doah woot yay

No snow, slow season needed the insurance money I guess.

Oh no. That hits me hard. My wife and I have lifetime memories there. We stopped last Oct just to walk the beach and check out the lobby. She is going to be stunned when I tell her.

Yes. They no longer have the covered bridge over the Poplar. That was cool in its day.

Apparently there actually were no guests which really surprised me.

Encountered some skiers up in cloquet last weekend, both were to lutsen and spirit, conditions not very good. Not surprising noone was there on a Monday.

Could’ve been a real tragedy on a weekend.

It’s a terrible thought, but you know that’s what’s running through people’s heads. I hope it had nothing to do with it.

Ever notice how successful bars and restaurants rarely burn down?? The not so successful on the other hand….

Beautiful area up there, one of my favorite webcams to check out especially in fall is this one:

Not sure, but that may be some residual smoke down on the shoreline……

A local to me ski lodge burned down fall of 2022… right before an epic snow season. They re-opened this winter and are getting crushed by december and January rains.

Not positive but I think Lutsen was recently trying to expand, and also just bought a UP Ski Resort.

Why do these types of fire always seem to start in the middle of the night, or close to it?

It’s funny that pretty much every new resort that pops up is because the last one just burnt down…

    Voyagaire’s Lodge Crane Lake
    Hungry Jack’s Gunflint Trail
    Cass Lake Lodge

There are many more as well…
I think that the locals just let things roll anticipating that they will get a new resort out of the deal.

I heard that they’ve had multiple fires there over the last few years? Just heard rod bits on the radio today.

My guess is that they were renovating in the off season, and someone left a pile of staining rags laying where they shouldn’t have and poof.

Yah, I heard that as well.
Someone had mentioned that they didn’t want to overload the few contractors up there all at once.
Four fires – two in Lutsen and two in Grand Marais – have burned down North Shore businesses since 2020

The previous fires were in 1949 and 1951.

If I know the sup on that job, which I think I do, I highly doubt that, he runs a very tight ship. They’ve been renovating parts bit by bit for some time and were going to be doing more bits in the years to come.

But good reminder for all the painters in the threads to properly dipsoe of ur rags! Usually a few projects I’m on a year that’s exactly this.

Apparently, there have been a bunch of fire safety violations of late with three or four still unresolved.

Sad deal. We stayed there for a wedding several years ago
