Follow up question from my previous post. How big of water do you think I can safely fish with another adult in the boat with the new Fury XL 1625 Tiller and a 50HP Mercury? (i.e. Winni, Leech, Lake of the Woods, etc…) I really really like the idea of getting this boat but want to make sure I don’t handicap myself too much with too small a boat.

I pasted the link to the dimensions of the boat.

Looking forward to hearing others opinions on this. As for is this a big enough boat the answer: “it depends”.

There are days that blow where almost nothing is big enough. Not sure how well this boat will handle bigger water like Leech, LOW, or Rainy. On good or mostly good days you should be fine.

Other opinions? I might be looking at the Fury as well just one of the lower trims.

I had a similar sized Alumacraft last year and thought it was awesome for river fishing and small/medium sized lakes. I had planned to use it for the occasional Mille Lacs trip, but then took it out to South Dakota on Waubay. Went down the lake from the launch no problem but when I decided to come back 3 hours later, the winds had kicked up to 25-30. Bad deal, if I hadn’t got behind an 18 footer with windshield I don’t think I would have made it back. Needles to say I didn’t take it out on Mille Lacs after that experience. You might be okay if you stayed in the general vicinity of the launch, if that’s where you want to fish.

I wanted to stay with a smaller boat but I wanted something that I could take in the shallows of a river and also the occasional Mille Lacs/Waubay run. I ended up selling the Alumacraft and bought a 16 foot Yarcraft tiller. Still easy to tow (760 pounds), fits in my small garage, but can handle some of the bigger stuff much better than my tin boat.

I have the same sized type of boat (Crestliner Superhawk) with a windshield. I have been on all the big lakes of MN and WI. (LOW, Mille Lacs, Winni, Red, Leech, Pepin, Rainy)and have been fine. i know the limitations though and so I plan ahead. that being said if I did it all over again there is no way I buy less than a 17 foot boat.

I can’t imagine the 1625 Pro guide would cost too much more. But it’s a little heavier and has a wider beam I believe. I’d take a look at this too if your looking for a 16′ boat

I have Lowe Pontoon Boat SF234 Sport Fish, it is really good for fishing on hard water.
