Lund Tyee GL downrrigger mounting?

Is there anyone on here that’s put downriggers on a glass Lund? I’m interested in a 186 Tyee GL, but I need to have a way to mount riggers and dispey and board rod holders. This boat does have the sport track system, but unlike the aluminum boats where the track is incorporated into a solid extruded gunnel, on the glass boats there is just the aluminum track screwed to the glass and supporting wood behind it with screws that are about the size of Sheetrock screws. I’m very concerned that the stress of the riggers and multiple rods could tear the sport track out of the glass. While I wouldn’t typically mind just bolting down a track system to the gunnels, in this case they are too narrow and the track would be wider than the gunnel making it unsightly and causing issues with a cover. Anyone out there tackle this challenge yet?

I had the same problem. I made some custom aluminum mounts that attached to a seat base using a seat post that then locks into one of the seat pockets. The pictures actualy show two different mounts that I’ve done for the Lund GL boats.

Awesome! I’ve been researching/considering doing something similar to your seat-base custom job. Any suggestions and or lessons learned from your vantage point would be greatly appreciated. I also don’t have access to a machine shop, so I’m just curious how expensive a job like that would be (NOT including the engraving)if I farmed that out to a custom metal shop close to me. Any ideas?

Dave F, Nice set up. I am faced with the same situation. I don’t think the sport trax on my 186 Tyee GL will handle a downrigger set up. First, its only a little over 3″ and the rigger base is probably 4. May be using heavy balls for deep fishing so more stress on the fiberglass and if I get snagged I’ve got a real issue. The seat post and seat mounts are what I am looking at doing. However, I think I am going to run one continuous piece of aluminum 60″ total over the top of the posts and attach to the seat mounts. Thumb screws on the big jon rigger base and one piece pulls out with both post and the alum base. Looking at 3/8″ thick. Any comments welcome. thanks
