I have an opportunity to buy a Lund SSV-14. I have an old 15 horse Johnson that I could use with it. I’m 225 pounds and would mostly be fishing alone, occasionally with one more person. Would that rig get me around OK and be safe?

my friend is 6’3″ 250# and he and i fish in his 13′ 7″ boat with a 6HP 2 stroke on it. top speed is 11 MPH. Fishes fine. enough room to jig or troll. I would think with a 15 horse you could probably get 15+ MPH

You’ll be fine. I weigh about the same and my kids (6 and 9) ski behind a similar Alumacraft with a mid-80’s 15-HP Johnson.

We fish 3 guys out my dad’s. 20hp suzuki, love that rig. One guy took a spill out if it on croix opener, got back in just fine with guys leaning the right way.

I also resent your definition of a big guy as 225# smash

Well if we are going by these measurement I better get a bigger boat for the wife and I. I better be careful how I explain this weight to boat length issue to her. rotflol

Looks like a real light boat. I run a 15 hp with a much heavier boat and get to about 15 mph with two guys, big trolling motor, batteries, gas, gear, etc. I’d bet you could get 20+ mph if fishing alone most days. Plenty of space for two guys to fish too. Biggest safety concerns with those little boats come when you stand up and when one guy starts leaning one way or the other, especially with waves. Depends on your balance! I’d recommend though!

Every watercraft is required to have a maximum HP rating, person capacity, and weight capacity. I advise you check that prior to loading up. If you exceed that, and have an accident, your insurance won’t cover you. Not to mention that it’s simply unsafe too.

I’ll bet you’re really fun at parties. shock

Buy it you shouldn’t have any problems. We use 2 ssv 14 and an ssv 16 in the boundary waters we motor in as far as we can the drop the motors on an island and oar in the rest of the way.they track straight and aren’t to bad to oar either. I will say they handle more than the are rated for. Don’t ask how I know lol.

I fished Leech for years in a 14ft Starcraft with 25 Mercury. There was only one time I thought I was going to die!
