Just put in 4 new batteries and a new charger, I went with northstar 3-27 series AGM for trolling. And 1-24 starting. Charger is a minnkota mk460pc. I had to mount the charger in a different spot due to size. I think it turned out pretty good. I mounted the charger on nylon strips so no chance of electrolysis.

Only a 24 series for cranking? What size outboard and ? for electronics? Many guys end-up short in that department, and have to add an extra house battery.

90 mercury, 2 helix 9s, only run 1 at a time. that’s the way it came, with a 24. a 27 would be too tall. I guess I could have mounted sideways but the I would have to change the pan.

northstar has a great full 4yr warranty so if it goes bad I will just pay the difference between 24 and 27 and upgrade and change pan and mount sideways, something about mounting a battery sideways is wierd to me.

thanks, it took a while, I couldn’t mount it where my old 3 bank was, the 4 bank is a bit bigger. so I utilized the compartment next to my rod locker, it had an access hole already there. just took half a day to reroute cables and pulled up the center floor to run an extension cable for the starting battery. turned out pretty good and clean. plus pulling up the floor let’s me explore more of the boat and how it set up as far as fuel tank and stuff.

Nice job. I bought a retirement present last year, 2020 1875 ProGuide, and went with 3 group 27s and the same charger as you. I did go with a group 31 dual purpose AGM for the starting battery with a Helix 12 and LiveScope and the livewells running a lot. wink

did you have to mount the 31 on its side? I measured mine and it would have been about 1/2 to tall.

Most brand 27 series are the same height as a 24. Seems odd yours were taller.

The 31 is upright. Maybe my compartment is deeper than yours. I also checked on battery sizes and the 24 and 27 are the same height and width. They differ in length.

roger maybe that’s what it was. I know my battery post is just below the edge of the hatch door.

On mine the post is ~1 inch below the edge of the opening. But the opening is large enough so the post is not under that edge. So there is another 1/2-3/4 of an inch clearance to the bottom of the hatch cover.

ya you guys are right, same height just longer, I think I just went with the 24 because it was the same size that came from the dealer, and I would have had to change the pan. maybe I will call batteries plus back and ask them if they will exchange it for another 27 and pay the difference. then change the pan. but on the other hand, I only run 1 graph at a time and strictly a catch and release guy so I don’t run my live wells, unless I want to keep a few crappie but that’s rare. hell I don’t know.

If it aint broke, dont go through the hassle. The old 24 worked for your fishing style, no need to change.

In my new boat the dealer put in 3 group 27 wet (non AGM) batteries for the trolling motors and a group 24 wet (non AGM) battery for the starting battery. I had given them a slip of paper with how I wanted it rigged and specifically stated AGMs for all batteries with the starting battery a group 31 dual purpose.

In my old boat I had a group 24 dual purpose for the starter and all electrical. It never left me stranded.

Mike, you’ll be fine. I just retired in December and I’ll be taking more multiple day trips and might not always be able to recharge each night. That’s the main reason I went bigger.
