Lund Impact Steering

A while back someone had commented on how hard it was to steer their Lund. I do not have the power steering, just the “arms” that go back and forth with direction from the steering wheel cable.
My question is someone had mentioned how they used some lubricant to make the steering smoother and easier but I can’t find the thread – anyone remember or was the one who posted what they did? Not finding anything online when I search.

Sorry I’m not sure about the lube and I don’t recall the conversation, but I will say any hard steering I’ve ever encountered was related to how I was trimmed. Sometimes I trim all the way down to cut through big wake on the river and steering is always fairly stiff when I’m running all the way down like that.

Now my old boat and my dad’s current boat (same model, different motors) always had very hard steering unless all the way planed. I don’t quite know why this is, however his skeg is very bent (but mine wasn’t) so we’re kind of at a loss on the 1998 Pro Sport steering. Different hull design than the newer IPS stuff so guessing that makes a difference.

THanks, I read somewhere last Spring maybe they wiped off all the grease on their steering arm and used some kind of lubricant. ( see the arm/rod in the picture) I was hesitant to do that however. Novice boat owner ( only my second one in the last three years).
Just kind of hard to turn unless under full power and trimmed maybe that’s normal though – it’s definitely not power steering though.
On another note, dinged my skeg, is this big a ding big enough to worry about, maybe put on a skeg plate? Thought drilling holes might make it weaker though, just don’t know enough about it – thanks.

The skeg ding looks pretty normal from what I see on so many boats. I have one but smaller than that and it never seemed to impact anything (pun intended).

You can get that ding fixed for very minimal cost I would think, I really like Mark’s Prop Shop in Stacy, MN. He’s a family friend, does great work and has a great turnaround time.

Oh forgot to mention there should be a zerk on that area somewhere, I usually pump some new grease in every year and wipe off whatever old stuff comes out the sides. Not sure if that’ll help but couldn’t hurt to make sure yours is full.

Give it 1-2 pumps then steering wheel all the way each direction then I usually go 1-2 more pumps and do it again. Wipe off whatever came out.

I have a 97 pro sport and have the same problem. My dealer told me it’s because it has a single cable steering instead of dual.
