Lund Gas Vent Replace

I have a 2012 Lund Tyee in a Fish and Ski configuration. It has a plastic Attwood gas vent cover on the outside of the hull. I managed to shear it off flush with the hull leaving the vent hole open and exposed to spray. I ordered a replacement that is threaded and designed to be threaded into the female fixture inside the hull. I was able to screw out the remaining part of the broken piece. I assumed the fixture inside the hull was secured in place and all I had to thread in the new part. WRONG!!! Turns out the inside fixture is not secured. It was just sitting off center of the hole in the hull and unsecured. Apparently, it was just supported by the vent hose. I could still see it but there was no way I could thread in the new part. I could not reach the fixture from the inside of the boat because the boat is upholstered and there is no access port. Finally, using a 1/4 inch copper pipe with a very small tooth I bent in the end, I was able snag the threads of the inside fixture and pull it towards the hole, slide the new nipple down the pipe and, with much time, and many failed attempts, I was able to thread the new part into the inside fixture and pull out the copper pipe. My question to this forum – If I were to break this new one off, does anybody have a smarter approach to replacing the vent cover? I would like to replace this fixture with a flush mount but that would require access to the fixture inside the boat. Is there a way to get to the female without tearing out my upholstery. I see a small panel in the front of the rod storage area in the side. Can that be removed to give me access?

I have a 2019. The inner pad was secured so just had to screw the new one on. Not much help – sounds like you had a brilliant approach however- Kudos!!
