Lund Gas Vent Overflow

On a friends Lund 1999 1700 Angler SS some gas will leak out of the two vents while pumping gas and I have seen it leak out when he would turn a corner while trailering. It leaked yesterday right at the start of fueling not just as it approaches full. Has anyone had this problem and found a cure?

Gasoline “foams up” in the filler neck on a boat if you try to fill it too fast – like beer does if you pour it too fast into a glass.

So think of filling the boat like you’re pouring beer into a glass – fill it slowly and/or aim the gas nozzle so the stream goes down the side of the filler neck. If it still bubbles up, turn the nozzle 180 degrees and try it from that angle.

I have the same boat in the 2001 model.

Seldom if ever does gas come out of the vent until full. That’s how I can tell it’s full although if I’m not careful it will shoot out of the vent.

Once full, mine will squirt fuel out of the vent on corners.
Unless the vents are capped off, I don’t know how I could stop this.

It does that because of the bend in the filler hose at the tank. Not much you can do but fill it slowly. My buddy has a 2005 Lund 1800 Fisherman and it does the same thing and you can actually smell fuel vapors when he opens the side compartment by the fuel filler. We’ve pulled the floor panel over the tank and checked all connections. Dealer said don’t smoke in the boat.

I have a 2015 Lund with the new closed system, much better. It has a check valve and does not overflow or leak fuel vapors.

My Lund fisherman does the same…

Fill it carefully and dont top it off to the neck. I have always put my ear towards the gas opening when filling so I can hear when the tube starts to fill then Stop.

I used to have the 2004 model. I’d open the battery compartment and could then see the tank and would fill accordingly.

I have an ’03 and it always comes out the overflow when filling regardless of how slow. Disappointing. Lots of gas going into the lakes when filling up on the water.

I have never seen it come out turning, just filling. Paint on trailer is faded right under that area.

My 2011 impact has always had an issue.
Always had to fill very slowly.
took a while to figure out how much better a 4 stroke was on gas.
to complicate matters, it reads empty at a half tank full.
hard to put 20 gals in a ten gallon hole.
and when it does overflow and gets some in the boat , the compartments smell like gas for months.

With gas gauges that “read empty at half full” watch the gas gauge as you go up on plane and come off plane – the change in tilt of the boat will make the gauge bounce when it still has a lot of gas in the tank. When the gauge bounces very little the tank is close to empty and it’s time to switch tanks/fill up.

To fix the fuel issue with having to fuel it up slow, this is what I have done in the past. You have to check both the main gas line and the vent line for bends in the line. Basically if you have a dip in the line where gas will not run back to the tank it will cause the gas when fueling fast to bubble back up the filler tube. To fix just cut and shorten the line that needs to get rid of the dip.

The fuel smell issue can be a few things. Make sure all lines are hose clamped, make sure the vent is open, check the tank and make sure the seal on the sender is not leaking, check the fuel inlet and outlets on the tank to make sure they are sealed tight.

Exactly what I found this winter when I tore out my floor to replace ply and carpet. Fuel smell under the tarp was one of the additions to repair. The man asked me first if my tarp covered over the vent holes and I said no. Top of the tank was an obvious finger pointer, while we were at it I replaced all fuel lines too.
