I took our new pup out for her first boat ride last night and just like my last two dogs she fell out of the boat before my second cast..haha.

She did great so that was nice for me anyways. She got to lick a dozen walleyes and got a little swimming in. I will chalk that up as a good day!

A very good day! What’s the pup’s name?

Her name is Kota and is 14 weeks old now. She behaved better in the boat than she does at home on a good day.

    That’s great! Haha.

We got a new pup about the same age, it took her 4 trips before she decided to jump out. Good times )

Haha my lab did the same thing on opener as a pup a few years back, water temp was like 36 degrees, she’s good about staying in the boat now rotflol

I will keep an eye out for you Pete. If you see me at the washout stop by for a beer. We could let the two butt heads play around.

Have you guys had black dog fishing buddies?
My black lab seems to over heat when he is in the boat, yellow lab is much better with the heat.
Maybe I should toss him in the water every once in a while, maybe that’s the start of a bad habit.

During the summer it would be best to just leave the dogs at home.
There is no reason to have them in the boat/heat all day.

I have 2 yellow labs specifically for that reason. I’ve never had issues with overheating in the boat all summer long w/ a yellow – frequent stops to swim/pee and having a water dish out seems to work well.

I could see where a black lab would be problematic.

I think any dog would be fine out here on the river in the summer time. Like Pete said you just want to stop often and let them get in the water. I could see being on Mille Lacs all day being an issue but down here there are plenty of places to stop at shore and let them run around like idiots and get some swimming in.

It’s hard to leave them at home when they are crucial to helping you find fish.

Keep a bowl of cold water available. Quick swims. And a cheap umbrella!

Nice! Ripley finds any bit of shade. He’s white, but Spinoni are not great in the heat. Thankfully, he loves to swim.

My dog will avoid any and all shade areas in the boat, even on 85 degree days…He loves being in the sun and gets a little grumpy if he can’t lay in it. I’ve had him groan at me for standing in his sun before…German Shorthair Problems I guess…He isn’t a huge fan of water unless he’s wearing a lifejacket, which I also find kinda quirky…

That’s one good looking pup, Buschman. She looks happy as a clam in the boat.

Have a Rhodesian ridgeback and she hates the water but loves the boat and the heat. She’ll lay in the sun all day long…just needs water every once in awhile.

Its fun to see the photos of your fishing buddies!

My 1st lab would not miss a day in the boat no matter how hot or cold it was. She was a true die hard. It was a bad deal if I left the dock without her. At our lake up north I would leave her in the cabin if my boat was too crowded and tell everyone to not let her out.. One day they did and she swam about 800 yards out to someone fishing because she thought it was me. The guy tried to lift her in but couldn’t. I ended up seeing what was going on and had to go over and pick her up. Just amazing how dedicate a dog can be to the fishing boat. She spent 3-4 days in the boat every week from March to January when I was younger and never wined or made a fuss. Best fishing dog ever!! Miss that girl.. Sorry to go on about it but every time I see a yellow in a boat I think of that pup. Happy to have a new one back in the boat and hope she likes it half as much as my last one.
