The dime size sore on my left shoulder just wouldn’t heel. Seemed like it was getting better then it would break open and bleed. After a year of this it was time to get it checked out along with freezing off a very small wart on my finger.

Yup, doc said the c word.

The good thing is that it’s a quick and somewhat painless surgery and basal cell carcinoma doesn’t spread. It’s not in the middle of my face so no chance of improving my looks. So next week I’ll have it cut out along with a couple other pieces of flesh that are growing in the wrong areas.

Cause of this type of cancer. Too much sun. (That’s kind of funny since I’ve been night fishing for 14 years.

I know there’s a lot of Ido members that have had skin cancer and cancer in general.
I just hope the old saying doesn’t work out in my case…”3rd time is a charm”.

“Wear your sunblock” and a hat.

    good news BK…….

Good advice. I had a growth removed from my bottom lip last year. They tried to freeze it off first, twice. kept coming back so the doc busted out the knife and removed it during an extended office visit. Luckily it was not cancerous, doc did say that pathology report showed it was some kind of keratosis? Sun exposure was the cause and I now wear spf? lip balm , spf70 sun block (yes it’s a real number) and I’ve got a big ol sun hat for when I’m on the water…….fun getting old. When I was a kid I lived on a lake and we were always in the water and sun without a care in the world.

Yikes! Good luck on the surgery, BK. Glad to hear it’s not the kind that spreads and should be a quick surgery. It’s scary to think about nonetheless. I’ve been wearing my sunscreen a lot this summer and long sleeves when I can. Being a ginger, I have numerous freckles, cherry angiomas, and other spots and I check them religiously for changes. I hate when new ones appear out of nowhere – I’m always worried about them. But I try to remember the ABC rule: Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter, Evolving.

That’s great news, being basal cell rather than squamous or worse yet. That squamous cell I had carved out was an eye opener for me. Wide brimmed hats and sunscreen….my two amigos anymore.

I go in on the 10th for a regular skin cancer check-up. Hopefully I’ll get a clean screen again.

Doc said it was clearly not from the Hamm’s or Spam, but I thought it was odd that she asked if I was around any people that worked for a union?? wave

    It’s that big?

Ok, my brain is going. I read that wrong.

    I said that lovingly too.

Hope all goes well and this is your last C post. I mean, that you never have C again, to be clear. )

I have been through the C ringer already once because of the sun. Sister survived stage 3 with a 20% chance of living 5 years (it’s now 15 years later). I try to wear long sleeve shirts when possible and definitely sunscreen. The sun isn’t something to play around with.

The C word is scary regardless if it is only a basil cell. My Father had I don’t know how many basil’s froze out. Every 6 months for the last 4 or 5 years of his life he had 6 to 10 spots hit with liquid nitrogen. He always looked like he fell off of a truck doing 60 mph. Good old sun from being a farmboy. Healthy tan my a$$.
Now me I’ve had 7 spots cut out and only one was cancer but it was the big one, melonoma. SPF Long sleeve pants and shirts, hat with neck cover, gloves, and sun screen for the face. When it is super hot I’m off the water. 10 years safe this Oct.
Good luck BK and cover up now that your chasing those daytime fish! doah

I got the clean bill from my surgeon today so I don’t have to do the checks for this cut anymore. I am scheduled for a derm appointment for skin screening in December just to stay on top of this crap. I don’t care how simple the issue, getting the C confirmation is a crap feeling.

I’ll mirror the sunscreen, wide brimmed hats. I’m going to round up some of the high tech long sleeved pull-over shirts that breathe well and wick moisture off you. I’ll be looking for 3xl so they don’t stick or cling to me…hate that.
