I have a Lowrance HDS 10 Insight USA, No Transducer and a Lowrance HDS 8 Insight USA 50/200 khz Transducer dealer installed. When I compare the chart details between these to displays, I notice that the HDS 8 Insight USA shows significantly better detail in bottom couture lines and other different things. I have checked to be certain that they both have “Chart Details” set the same. What am I missing? Shouldn’t these 2 HDS units display the same map? Could this be a map version issue?

Insight USA Map version Question

Just guessing here but the pixel count is the same on both units so I have been told that the 8 will be sharper. I am curious about this as boat is at dealer waiting for phone call as to what to install.
I am leaning towards 2, 8″s because they are suppose to have sharper picture that the simulator doesn’t really do justice to.
Any one else?
March 17, 2011 at 10:52 pm #948222Not sure if it would make a difference on the insight mapping
but are both your units running the 3.5.33.217 software?March 18, 2011 at 12:45 am #948258Quote:

Good question. Where do I find that info, and where would I get an update if I am running something older.March 18, 2011 at 12:50 am #948260Like said above it has to do with the pixels. The 8 and 10 are the same but with the 10 obviously having the bigger screen its not as sharp as the 8.
And the newest software version is 3.5. Here is the link it tells you how to find it in your graph as well.

Thanks, I downloaded and installed the 3.5 updates on both units yesterday with no joy.
March 18, 2011 at 12:56 am #948263I guess the “other different things” has to be defined.
Is it different mapping or a just a “sharper” picture on
the 8?And I edited my typo to read 3.5.33.217.
March 18, 2011 at 1:00 am #948266There are other things that are missing on the 10. Like chart info Icons, Nav-Aids etc.

It’s probably a selected feature on the 8 that is not selected on the 10.
You can choose to enable these popups or to disable them.March 18, 2011 at 1:18 am #948278Thanks guys,
I’ll try and make sure everything is selected the same on both 8 & 10 to see it that is the fix. It just seems like I’m looking at 2 slightly different maps.
Thanks again – I’ll check back friday when I get back from the boat..March 18, 2011 at 11:12 pm #948589It could be the age of the units is different. Lowrance had a vendor change on the Insight Mapping and there is a special update to fix this for those who have experienced this.
An Insight Mapping Update is now available to select consumers who purchased HDS models with built-in Nautic Insight or Insight USA mapping. These consumers are eligible to receive a FREE Insight SD card with updated mapping information.
Due to a change in mapping vendors, Insight Map Versions 3.0 and 3.3 did not include the same level of mapping detail included in previous Insight versions. An improved version of the mapping information is being released to update the areas impacted by this change.
Lowrance is providing this SD card with updated map details only to consumers who purchased HDS units with embedded Nautic Insight or Insight USA mapping versions 3.0 or 3.3. This SD card will need to remain in the unit during operation in order to read the new mapping information.
You do NOT need this update if:
• Your unit is not an HDS Nautic Insight or Insight USA unit • Your Insight chart information is earlier than 3.0 (see Eligibility) • You rely primarly on Navionics, LakeMaster or Fishing HotSpots for mapping
Eligibility: To determine if you are eligible for an Insight card upgrade perform the following steps on your HDS unit:
• Press the MENU key twice, scroll to System and press ENTER, scroll to About and press ENTER.
• If the Lowrance chart indicates Nautic Insight 3.0 or 3.3 or Insight USA 3.0 or 3.3, you are eligible to receive a free SD card with updated mapping information.
To request your free update card (includes shipping):
Please email [email protected] with the Subject line: Insight Mapping Update. Include in the body of the email, the following information
• Name • Address • Product model
• Product serial number • Valid daytime phoneOR
Call Lowrance Customer Care to arrange for delivery of your Insight card with updated mapping information
Units may also be returned to Lowrance for this upgrade, allowing operation without the SD card being in the unit. The customer is required to pay cost of shipment to Lowrance. Lowrance will pay return shipment fee. You can request a return authorization number on line at: http://www.lowrance.com/Support/My-Account/. Please allow 48 to 72 hours for turn around of your HDS unit.

Thank You so much. I think this must be the problem with my unit. I will check if I am eligible for an Insight card upgrade and let everyone know how it works out.
