Does anybody have an extra ethernet cord they would like to sell? I have an HDS 5x that I need to update and I need the cable. New cords are 60 bucks and I’ll probably use it once.

Johnskully,
What is it you are trying to accomplish? Are you just trtying to get software update installed? If I’m not mistaken, the HDS 5X has a memory card slot, correct?
If so, and you are just trying to get to version 3.5 that can easily be done. If something different, please explain.
ThanksMarch 9, 2011 at 1:13 pm #945338They have a 2 ft. cable at LEI for 20.00.
My boat is in storage otherwise you could
bring the unit over here and we could get it done.I do have an intermittent cable that you could try if
you can’t find a working one or someone to help you
out.dd

Installation Instructions for HDS-5X.
You will need an additional HDS unit with an SD card slot connected via the Ethernet port to update the HDS-5x. Be sure to update the HDS with the SD card slot before updating the HDS-5x.
Make sure the SD/MMC card reader is properly connected to your computer (and, if necessary, that the drivers are installed).
Insert a blank, formatted SD/MMC card that is 512MB or larger into the card reader.
Click on the “Install This Update From the Web” link below to go to the installation page.
Wait for the Java web installer to download and run. Follow the Lowrance update installation instructions. If you are not sure about a step, just select the default choice. When the installer finishes, you will be prompted to click Finish to exit.
Turn on the HDS unit with the card slot. Leave the power OFF on the HDS-5x until prompted to power on by the unit with the card slot.
Place the SD/MMC card containing the updated operating software in the SD card slot.
Press PAGES.
Scroll the pages menu to Utilities (Gear and Wrench logo), select Files. and press ENTER.
Select Memory Card and press ENTER.
Highlight the software update file (file ending in .upd) on the card and press ENTER. A message will appear giving you the option to upgrade “this display” or a “remote display”.
Select Remote Display and press ENTER.
Once prompted, press and hold the HDS-5x up arrow key while pressing and releasing the power key. Continue to hold the up arrow key until the update starts on the HDS-5x (Launching external application).
If the message “Charts too big for memory. Refusing to copy charts. Press Enter to continue.” is displayed, please disregard and press the ENTER key to complete the update.
When the update is complete, press the POWER key to restart the HDS-5x. Wait until the unit has restarted before pressing ENTER and removing the SD/MMC card from the HDS unit with the card slot.LowranceDownloadsProduct Softwar…Installation In…Manuals

Drivers and FirmwareMarch 9, 2011 at 2:01 pm #945352I got this off Lowrances web page in manuals. This is why I thought it had a memory card slot. Shows it does.
I have a 2′ ethernet cable and an HDS 10 sitting herre in my office and owuld be happy to help, but I’m in Amery, WI.
March 9, 2011 at 11:35 pm #945623Wow, wonder how many Ethernet cords will be bought and returned just to accomplish updates? I am sure there are enough to wish they would have just added a USB…On the other hand, if you have another unit with ethernet it would be worth having the ethernet cord for transferring data, etc. also.
March 9, 2011 at 11:56 pm #945630I wish it had the memory card slot. It sure would make life easier.
I have a buddy that has an HDS 7. We just need the dang cord. Thanks guys.
John SchultzInactivePortage, WIPosts: 3309March 10, 2011 at 12:03 am #945637Could you take it in to a retailer and have them update it? I don’t know if that’s a possibility, but you never know unless you ask.
March 10, 2011 at 2:49 am #945719I know of some guys here in the Des Moines area that went to BPS in Altoona and had theirs updated. Both Low and HB, I just thought they were challanged. I didn’t know it was that much of a pain on this particular Low.
March 12, 2011 at 6:24 pm #946537We tried updating my buddies HDS 7 to the latest 3.5 update. His unit wouldn’t read the update. We would put the chip in then turn the unit on. The unit would start up like normal. But if you browsed the files on the card it should the update file on there??
Any ideas???
March 12, 2011 at 8:20 pm #946550Make sure the update is the only thing on the card.
Make sure the card is FAT formatted. Not FAT 32.
March 12, 2011 at 8:46 pm #946557when you downloaded the update did you select run on the download,at the lowrance web site, you have to select run to get it too work in unit,I just pull up the chip on my computor and delete all info on the card before the update I have never checked file type.

How do I find that out?? It’s a brand new card I just bought it.
Go to “My Computer”
Right click on the “Removable Disk”
Click on “Properties” to check the current format.
Did you get it to update yet John?
March 16, 2011 at 7:32 pm #887980Yes, my problem was I was clicking save not run. I got the update to start running and the unit locked up in the middle of the update. Then I couldn’t get the unit to power on. The unit is on it’s way to Lowrance now. I guess they get to update it.
Thanks for all the help.
