My understanding is the 8 & 10 allow more options with screen splitting and/or the Structure Scan. Also I think the 5 & 7 only have 1 SD card slot, but the 8 & 10 have 2. Probably more of an issue if you use a map card and want to record to an SD card.

I just picked up a 5 from Jolly Ann Marine, good price with no tax and free shipping (they sponsor this web site also). Wade will probably chime in with input. I think from what I read the 50kHz transducer is for deep water.

83/200kHz for sure. The 50/200 kHz is not applicable for river/lake fishing, more of a deep sea deal.

If you plan to add the structure scan, the 5 is a little small for the side scan. Works fine for the down scan. If you plan to do side scan, I would not go smaller than the 7. I have a 5 and a 7 and plan to get rid of the 5 in the spring and add either an 8 or a 10 and move the 7 to the bow.

I just got the HDS5 and think it is a great unit . Still learning it . The one thing I can not find is how to use icons or does the unit have them . Waypoints work fine . I just want to use icons instead of waypoints sometimes . Is the icons only used with the POI ( point of interest )?

James, I haven’t used the on my 8 yet, but if I recall, press the waypoint button once and you’ll be able to change icons before it drops it on the map.

Give it a try. If I’m wrong someone will chime in soon.

HDS units don’t have icons. Not a fan of this change.

Goes to show how much I use them.

My fishing area has the icons that I imported…I guess(?)

Thanks for the fast replies . Now I can stop looking for them. I suppose I could change the symbols and use way-points then go back and delete them. That would make them easy to recognize. Jim
